WNDR Museum
The WNDR Museum is a quirky and unique museum that offers hands-on art exhibits that play with lighting, color, sound, and more. Children two and under are free, and older ones will love the free space to roam. In fact, the museum is one of our favorite teen and tween hangouts.
Chicago River Walk
A family-friendly destination, the Chicago River Walk offers stunning views of landmarks like the Wrigley Building, Marina City, and the Michigan Avenue Bridge, complemented by numerous activities in a walkable setting. Kids can splash at the playful Jetty fountain, spot boats cruising by, or explore the McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum, while parents enjoy stroller-friendly paths and ample seating. Families will also love casual dining spots like Tiny Tapp or Sweet Home Gelato.
Color Factory
Chicago’s Color Factory is a vibrant, hands-on museum where kids, teens, and adults can immerse themselves in colorful rooms filled with interactive art and playful surprises. From a giant ball pit and confetti-filled spaces to photo-ready installations and stroller-friendly pathways, it offers something engaging and memorable for every member of the family.
Graceland Cemetery
Graceland Cemetery is a surprisingly family-friendly spot, as it seamlessly blends history, nature, and art in a peaceful, open-air setting. Older kids and adults can appreciate the stories behind Chicago’s most famous figures, from architects like Daniel Burnham to retail legends like Marshall Field. Younger visitors enjoy the park-like landscape, featuring winding paths, a large pond, and towering old trees that evoke a sense of a garden rather than a cemetery. Bonus: the cemetery is free to visit.
Climbzone
At ClimbZone, everyone can get in on the action, from kids scaling playful walls shaped like castles and superheros to teens and adults testing their skills on more challenging climbs. With secure harnesses and comfortable spots to watch and encourage, families can share an experience that combines creativity, activity, and plenty of fun. Check out our full article of ninja courses and indoor climbing to find more options near you.
Museum of Illusions
Families of all ages will have a blast at Chicago’s Museum of Illusions. Exhibits include body-bending spaces, such as the tilted room and vortex tunnel, as well as “illusions” like interactive installations that boggle the mind. Parents will love that kids four and under are free, and teens will appreciate the freedom to explore and interact with the exhibits.
In the Game
In the Game has something for everyone in your family, regardless of age or interest. This massive entertainment center is packed with arcade games, virtual reality experiences, laser tag, mini bowling, and even a full menu, allowing parents to relax while their kids play.
Take a hike
While there are many trails and nature preserves in and around the city, our recommendation for the whole family is Waterfall Glen, part of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. The well-marked, mostly flat trails are stroller-friendly in many areas, and the main loop offers manageable distances with plenty of spots to rest or turn back. Along the way, families can explore shady woodlands, open prairies for model airplane flying, and, of course, the picturesque waterfall that’s perfect for photos and a quick snack break. Bigger kids can try their hand at orienteering, wildlife sightings, and fishing opportunities.
We have a lot of hiking recommendations near Chicago, and some great stroller-friendly trails as well.
