A visit to Long Island's North Fork is always a treat, and a stop at one of the local flower farms is a perfect summer adventure for the whole family. Horton's Flower Farm in Mattituck is a cute, interactive spot for nature-loving kids who appreciate flowers. My kids had a blast at their first experience hand-picking flowers on the farm, and they can't wait to pick more beautiful bouquets soon!

Exploring Horton's Flower Farm

Horton's Flower Farm greeted us with little paths leading to rows of wild flowers. This family-run flower farm is situated on a small, rustic side road in the wildly popular North Fork, about 15 minutes from the charming, maritime town of Greenport. It's minutes from Mattituck's downtown, which is teeming with locally-owned restaurants and shops.

The quaint flower farm is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from mid-July through the end of the growing season. We popped by mid-afternoon on an early July day and spent about 20 minutes in the flower fields.

The lovely couple who run this local spot greeted us, along with their adorable and helpful children! This family truly loves what they do, and it is inspiring to chat with them. They are happy to make flower-picking suggestions and help you choose your bouquet.

Top Things To Do at Horton's Flower Farm

U-Pick Flower Pricing, Classes, and Outdoor Fun

Visitors can pick from an array of specialized wildflowers and blooms. The farm offers flower-picking packages for kids and adults that include a mason jar that you get to bring your blooms home in. Kids up to age 12 can choose 12 stems for $20. The adult package option is 20 stems for $30. There is an admission charge for adults of $3 and $2 for kids if you are not picking flowers and just exploring.

Kids will love strolling in the flower fields and designing a floral creation. The farm's fields are small and very manageable for young kids. My kids loved choosing from the more than 25 variations of flowers, hand-seeded by the family.

The kids got to snip their chosen stems and arrange them into a beautiful summer bouquet. They had a blast getting creative with the unique wild flowers and felt proud of their designs. The flower fields also make for a cute photo backdrop.

The farm also offers Mommy and Me Fridays at 10:30am. The cost is $25 and includes admission for a mom or caregiver and one child. Additional kids cost $15. The hour includes picking a 15-stem flower bouquet, a nature-themed craft, fresh farm snacks, drinks, and nature play. The farm's nature play area is adorable for little ones, with a toy kitchen, tabletop car racetrack, and colorful tents. The class is geared towards kids aged 2 to 6. It is also a way for moms in the community to meet up and connect.

Dress for the weather, as the action takes place outdoors, and it can certainly get hot in the summer. Plan to feed the kids before or after your flower picking fun, and don't forget to bring along water and sunblock.

Special Flower Farm Events

The farm hosts special events throughout the season, like an annual Kids Day with flower picking, face painting, crafts, snacks, and more. The farm also has a kids' craft and u-pick children's bouquet picking package on certain weekend days, so always check the website calendar or the farm's social media account ahead of your visit.

For moms in the area or on a North Fork getaway, the farm hosts a Ladies Night Out on Fridays in July with special group bouquet pricing. It's a way for moms to unwind, enjoy flower picking time with friends, and then head to dinner in Mattituck or Greenport. The farm holds sunset picking Fridays and Saturdays in the summer from 6pm to 7:30pm for a fun family outing. There's also availability for private groups, school field trips, and homeschool trips.
