Less than a two-hour drive southeast of Chicago lies the quaint college town of South Bend, Indiana. While most know it as the home of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend is a bustling small gem with plenty of things to do with kids, making it the perfect fall weekend getaway for families. South Bend with Kids Day One: The downtown, River Park, and Edgewater neighborhoods 

The downtown square in South Bend is highly walkable and features a variety of restaurants, shopping options, parks, community events, and more. 

Breakfast: South Bend Farmer’s Market Cafe 

A short jaunt across the river, start your morning off with fresh produce and yummy, local nosh from the South Bend Farmer’s Market and their cafe, which boasts plenty of kid-friendly items on their menu. If inclined, grab some local delicacies on your way out. 

Potawatomi Zoo 

Spend the morning at this small but mighty zoo, which offers hands-on animal experiences like a petting zoo and giraffe feeding. Families can also enjoy the carousel, train ride, and the nearby park, which features splash pads. 

Lunch: Crooked Ewe Brewery and Ale House 

Just across the river lies this local brewery and BBQ joint. Options include brisket, pastrami, burgers, salads, sandwiches, and more. The spacious patio and kids' menu make this spot a family-friendly option.

MAKE South Bend

Conveniently located just south of the zoo, MAKE is an artistic space where the community comes together to create and share their work. Families can rent day passes for studio use or browse the shop, which features local art, home goods, and apparel, all with a South Bend theme. Plus, you can learn all about MAKE on PBS before your trip. 

Dinner: The Lauber

Your first day in South Bend ends at The Lauber, a former sheet-metal factory turned neighborhood restaurant. The spot features a large dog-friendly patio and an extensive but approachable menu with plenty of options for all.

South Bend with Kids Day Two: Quirky museums 

Just outside town lie two unique attractions that are sure to delight kids and teens. 

Breakfast: PEGGS

Before you take on the sights, start your day right by filling those tummies with a hearty breakfast at PEGGS. This breakfast and lunch spot features homemade cinnamon rolls, omelets, burgers, salads, and more. Your family will love the friendly atmosphere and cozy vibes. 

Indiana Dinosaur Museum

After breakfast, head to the newly opened Dinosaur Museum. Your dino-loving kiddos will swoon at this immersive museum, which offers a wide variety of dinosaur skeletons and sculptures, interactive fossil digs, and live demonstrations.

South Bend Chocolate and Factory Museum

Right next door to the Dinosaur Museum is the Chocolate Factory Store and Museum. Take your family on the factory tour, where they get to learn the story of chocolate, from where its origin to how it’s made today. You can even make your very own box of chocolates to take home. The collection shows off the history of American chocolate companies, making it a sweet adventure for the whole family.

Lunch: Fatbird 

If you’re still hungry after all the chocolate, hit Fatbird. Rooted in Southern cuisine, this restaurant offers a diverse range of specialties, including pimento cheese dip, hush puppies, jambalaya, and more. Kids will enjoy the laid-back vibe and the kids-specific menu tailored to their taste buds. 

River Lights

End your evening by catching the River Lights show at Pier Park, adjacent to downtown and nearby hotels. The lights show runs from around 30 minutes before sunset until midnight and then again from 6:00 AM until sunrise, year-round.

South Bend with Kids Day Three: By foot, by carriage, by car 

As the home to the Studebaker Corporation, South Bend is buzzing with classic cars and automotive history.

Breakfast: The Early Bird Eatery

As the name suggests, this morning breakfast stop is a favorite for breakfast. This elevated eatery offers items the kids will love, featuring options like blueberry lemon pancakes and a hot chocolate bowl. 

Potato Creek State Park 

Get your steps in and take in the trails and natural beauty of Potato Creek State Park. Just minutes from downtown, Potato Creek State Park is a top-tier destination for families, offering year-round activities, hands-on learning experiences, and an abundance of natural beauty. The park also features several kid-friendly trails — perfect for little explorers to enjoy nature at their own pace.

Studebaker Museum

The Studebaker National Museum is an excellent place for families to explore, featuring three floors filled with fascinating cars, wagons, and even presidential rides that bring history to life. Kids will have a blast at the Super Service Center, where they can play mechanic and tinker with tools and tires. From Lincoln’s carriage to a car featured in The Muppet Movie, there’s something fun for both kids and parents to check out together.

A ten-minute walk away lies your final spot for the day, Studebaker Brewing Co. Combining a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere with a rich history, this destination combines craft beer and hearty food.
