High school students seeking a less involved experience at Sarah Lawrence College can also take part in a week-long program in July. This program (which doesn’t include the housing option) explores the writing process for prose, poetry and even theater. Teens will take part in workshops, exercises and readings, including a celebration of student work on the final day. Some partial scholarships are available.
Writopia Lab – Multiple Locations
914-401-4159
This nationwide non-profit holds trimester-long creative writing workshops, as well as half-day events or full-day camps. There are also writing seminars just for teens, and there’s even a 12-day-long summer sleepaway camp that’s held in Pennsylvania. The New York Metro North chapter has locations in Hartsdale and Bedford Hills, as well as in Nanuet in Rockland County and in Stamford, Conn. Classes are available for kids as young as 7.
SUNY Purchase – Purchase
914-251-6515
Teens can take creative writing workshops in nearly any type of genre: poetry, fiction, personal essays, playwriting or memoir. They can even submit finished works to The Purchase Review, the school’s online literary journal. Middle school students can take part in a summer program that will offer instruction on the basic elements of writing and provide an opportunity to share work. They will also be given access to the college campus.
Kids Short Story Connection – Greenburgh
914-682-1574
The KSSC, held at the Greenburgh Town Hall, is one of the most involved creative writing programs for children in our area. Broken up by level and ability, kids as young as 9 can begin advancing through a seven-week series of workshops, where they will learn the tenets of writing, critiquing and even publishing. Sessions are held each spring and fall, and classes are capped at a cozy nine students. Residents and non-residents are welcome to register (although residents do receive a discount).
