Pumpkin Hill at Nalls Produce: A FREE Hidden Gem for Fall Family Fun Near DC

For over 30 years, visiting Nalls Produce and Garden Center in Franconia, Virginia has been a fall tradition for many families. Each autumn, Nalls opens Pumpkin Hill, a free play area with tunnels to crawl through, a mountain of pumpkins to climb, farm animals to meet, and a famous pumpkin wall that provides the perfect family photo op.
But despite its popularity, I'd still call Nalls a hidden gem. That's because if you don't know about it and you're driving by, blink and you'll miss it. From the street, Nalls looks like a small garden center and produce stand. But pull into the parking lot and you'll find a fall wonderland for families. Pumpkin Hill is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers, but older kids and grown-ups will also love soaking up the autumn vibes.
I recently stopped by Nalls Produce's Pumpkin Hill with my husband and 11-year-old daughter. We walked away with lasting memories and some pretty perfect pumpkins. Nalls Produce Pumpkin Hill Activities for Kids
Pumpkin Hill is named for the actual hill of pumpkins that little ones are encouraged to climb on—and trust me, I saw lots of gleeful kids doing just that! There are also tunnels to crawl through, a passageway under the hill that my daughter and I enjoyed crossing, a few small play houses, and a growth chart (where I imagine many families take annual photos of their kids).
Right next to the play area is a covered section with picnic tables, where families can enjoy the apple cider or pumpkin spice donuts they buy in Nalls' market—I highly recommend them! There's also a variety of fruits, veggies, and small bites for sale.
We enjoyed taking photos in front of Nalls' famous Pumpkin Wall, made up of wooden crates containing pumpkins and gourds of all colors, shapes, and sizes. My daughter remarked that she never knew so many kinds existed! We also enjoyed seeing the chickens, geese, and pigs, as well as the koi pond with turtles and fish. And we're still trying to figure out how they got those creepy faces on some of the pumpkins!

What You Can Buy at Nalls Produce in the Fall
Those pumpkins and gourds in all shapes, sizes, and colors are not only on the Pumpkin Wall—there are also tons for sale! Nalls sources them from local farms all over Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. So if you're looking for unique pumpkins and gourds to add to your seasonal decor, Nalls is a great place to get them. We found the prices to be similar to those at the larger fall festivals at farms, but many of those charge admission, whereas Nalls is totally FREE to enter.
Inside the market, there are plenty of seasonal fruits and veggies for sale, including apples of all varieties. There is also seasonal candy and treats; spices; jellies, butters, preserves, and salsas; apple cider; pickled products; and more. And of course, don't forget the apple cider and pumpkin spice donuts!
