Weekend Fun with Westchester Kids: St. Patrick’s Day Lives On, Free Arts Day and More, Mar. 21-22

Submitted by Susan Miele on Wed, 03/18/2015 - 5:00pm

This weekend in Westchester is a great time to be out and about with your family, as there’s a lot happening all over the county! The fun can be grouped into three main categories: St. Patrick’s Day, shows and art.

Though St. Patty’s Day took place earlier this week, it isn’t time to pack up your “Kiss Me I’m Irish” garb yet! The fun continues at the Yonkers Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade or Annual Sound Shore-Mamaroneck St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

As for shows, there are a bunch of appealing performances to choose from: Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival’s Macbeth, Fly Guy & Other Stories, Sammy Cortino: Magic to Rock and Free Concert: Yonkers Philharmonic.

For programs featuring the visual arts, get inspired at Open House and Free Arts Day, Museums at the Library Day or Celebrate Turkish Culture: Water Marbling Demonstration.

But wait—there’s more! Read on for even more fun events this weekend, then click through to our Event Calendar for even more events, both this weekend and beyond.

Weekend Fun with Westchester Kids: St. Patrick’s Day, Sugarfest and More, Mar. 14-15

Submitted by Susan Miele on Wed, 03/11/2015 - 5:00pm

At long last, the temperatures are rising, the snow is melting and spring is in the air--just in time to get out and enjoy all the fun activities that Westchester has to offer this weekend, including some great outdoor events.

Though St. Patrick’s Day is practically a month-long event around here, things heat up this weekend with several parades, including the Annual White Plains St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Annual Eastchester St. Patrick’s Day Parade. There are also shows that are relevant to the theme, like Caladh Nua: St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, Family Concert for St. Patrick’s Day and Song of the Sea. Plus, as feasting is a big part of holiday celebrations, get your preparations done at Let's Cook Together!

Other highlights this weekend: She Did...and So Can You! A Celebration of Women's History Month, an interactive commemoration and inspiring event; the continuation of maple-sugaring events like Sugarfest and Sugarin' Off; and for sports fans, The East Coast National Baseball Card Show.

Read on for details and consult our March GoList and Event Calendar to plan every day of the month!

Weekday Picks for Westchester Kids: Kids in the Kitchen, Swan Lake and More, Mar. 9-13

Submitted by Susan Miele on Sun, 03/08/2015 - 6:00pm

With no place left to put all the snow, we turn our attention to indoor fun this week in Westchester. There’s a lot going on, so read on for our top picks for each weekday!

March is Women’s History Month, and the Women’s History Month Celebration taking place this week is a great starting point for sensitizing your kids to the accomplishments of powerful women in history. Stay tuned for other events like this later in the month.

For a fun diversion, sign on for the Kids' Cooking Class—or any of the other events we’ve rounded up to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Another top pick is Mini-Anime Festival—whose name belies the Asian immersion that's really in store.

Mostly Free and Fun Things to Do This Weekend with Westchester Kids: Purim, St. Patrick’s Day, Babysitter Certification and More, Mar. 8-9

Submitted by Susan Miele on Wed, 03/04/2015 - 5:00pm

Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead this weekend! Daylight Savings begins on Sunday, and that means "longer days" to get out and enjoy all the festivities Westchester has to offer. This weekend also kicks off the St. Patrick’s Day parade season, with the Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Northern Westchester Putnam Parade (the third largest in the state!).

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t the only holiday being celebrated this weekend. You can enjoy Purim festivities at either Young Families Purim Celebration or Purim Carnival.

March is also sugaring season, when the sap is flowing and the pancakes are flipping. There are several sugaring events to choose from this weekend, including Maple Sugaring Party or Maple Sugaring.

For a departure from these themed activities, get practical with Babysitters Certification Course or simply kick back and sing along with My Fair Lady.

But wait, there’s more! Be sure to consult our March GoList and Event Calendar to plan the rest of the month!

Weekday Picks for Westchester Kids: Library Sleepover, Purim in the Wild West, Movies and More, Mar. 2-6

Submitted by Susan Miele on Sun, 03/01/2015 - 5:00pm

The switch from February to March reminds us that spring is near and warmer temperatures are on their way! While many weekend events this month in Westchester focus on St. Patrick’s Day and maple sugaring, the weekdays are a great time to take in other activities.

March is also the time for Purim, and we think Purim in the Wild West sounds like a rousing way to celebrate. Two fun, throwback films are being shown this week, one of which, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Party, means you don’t have to make dinner. If you feel that winter has impeded your adventurousness, enjoy an indoor slumber party at Family Night at the Library.

But don’t stop there! Read on for all our top picks for Monday through Friday—then continue on to our Events Calendar for even more great options for every day of the week, including ways to celebrate the annual Read Across America day, like Read Across America: "Oh, The Places You'll Go" & Dr. Seuss Bingo. Also consult our hot-off-the-press March GoList for our top picks for the month. And if you haven't already, be sure to sign up for our FREE newsletters!

Mostly Free and Fun Things to Do This Weekend with Westchester Kids: Maple Sugaring, Chinese New Year, Paul Taylor Dance Company and More, Feb. 28-Mar. 1

Submitted by Susan Miele on Wed, 02/25/2015 - 5:00pm

Temperatures rise a bit this weekend (woo-hoo!), just in time for both outdoor and indoor fun happening in and around Westchester!

This weekend kicks off the maple sugaring season in Westchester. Did you know it takes 40 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of maple syrup? Learn more about this fascinating production process at hands-on events like Maple Sugar Tours or Sugarhouse Chat.

Chinese New Year celebrations also abound this weekend. To kick off the Year of the Sheep, celebrate with Lunar New Year Celebration, Chinese New Year Celebration or another Lunar New Year Celebration.

High-caliber performances take the stage this weekend: The Amazing Max earned the praise of several noteworthy reviewers for his entertaining, interactive magic show, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company graces the stage right here in Westchester, having been widely regarded internationally for decades.

February is American Heart Month, as well as “Go Red for Women” Month, when public-education efforts are stepped up regarding the prevention of heart disease and the lesser-known risk to women. Paint the Mall RED offers a mother-daughter experience to get informed--while getting pampered.

That's not all--check out our Event Calendar for even more great activities every single day!
