Visiting a Mexican Orphanage with LA Kids: Corazon de Vida's Family Trips

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Fri, 05/08/2015 - 4:55pm

Back in the day, many of our parents used the image of orphans in other countries as a reason for us to eat what was on our plates. Where I grew up, the “starving children in Africa” were held up as the ones who would better appreciate my peas, while here in SoCal many kids heard about the orphans in Mexico. The big difference is that I lived pretty far away from Africa; Los Angeles kids can actually meet the less fortunate kids in Mexico, sometimes via charitable trips across the border to bring supplies, donations, and general good will.

Like anything well intentioned, this charitable family activity sometimes draws mixed reactions in the community; I've spoken to parents who are skeptical of how much good these trips actually do. I recently took my son on a day trip with the organization Corazon de Vida, and I found it to be a remarkable opportunity to introduce kids to the concept of helping others whose needs are greater than our own. My son saw boys his age leading a very different life from his, and by the time we left, some of the kids he'd been playing soccer with had the means to fulfill their dreams of joining a local soccer team.

Best Carousel Rides in the Los Angeles Area

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Wed, 04/29/2015 - 4:28am

And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round, and the painted ponies go up and down... Your children can travel back in time to a simpler day on one of five SoCal carousels. Some of the carousels below have a long history (like the one at Santa Monica Pier); some are great indoor activities for rainy days, and some even work as birthday party venues. What they all do equally well is put smiles on faces.

Disneynature's Monkey Kingdom: Parent Review of the Film at El Capitan

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Sun, 04/19/2015 - 9:28pm

There are not many kids' films that I actively look forward to, but Disneynature's Earth Day releases have become an annual tradition that I savor. Previous years' delights have included Chimpanzee, Bears, and African Cats, all of which have raised money to preserve the habitats of their stars. This year, Monkey Kingdom joins the all-star team of animal documentaries produced by this crew. Read on to find out what we love about the film (and seeing it at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre), and to see whether your little ones are ready to love it, too.

25 Reasons LA Is the Best Place to Grow Up or Raise Kids!

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 04/14/2015 - 8:14pm

Whether you moved out here, leaving a trail of envious family and friends who all imagine your life as an endless stream of Brangelina sightings and half-caf chai lattes, or you're one of those rare local novelties, the born-and-bred Angeleno who remembers what this place was like before the rest of us arrived—here you are raising your children in Southern California. Anyone can tell you SoCal is inherently pleasant (and a dry heat), but raising kids in the LA area goes way beyond pleasant. In so many ways, LA is the BEST place to raise (or be) kids! Here are 25 reasons that your children are lucky to be growing up the Angeleno way.

Lifeboat at The Wallis: A Moving Tale for Tweens, Teens, & Parents

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 03/17/2015 - 6:16am

If there's a fault to be found with Catherine Wheel's production of Lifeboat at the Wallis, it's only in how short the run is; seeing this moving and remarkable show requires making plans quickly, as it's only in town through Sunday. I'm beyond glad that I made the drive to Beverly Hills on a Friday night with my 11-year-old (not something I say lightly), because it's so rare for us to see a play together that inspires thought-provoking conversation all the way home. Lifeboat's true tale of two teenage girls who become lifelong friends after surviving a shipwreck together strikes a balance between exposing young audiences to some harsh reality while leaving room for moments of great joy.

Summer Camp Open Houses and Tours at LA Day Camps

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 03/10/2015 - 7:52pm

At this time of year we get loads of email from parents looking for guidance in finding the right summer camp for their kids. Of course, our LA Camp Guide is always a great place to find our recommendations for all sorts of camps; and browsing the listings in our camp directory also yields oodles of ideas and opportunities. But sometimes it helps to narrow down, to just look at a few—preferably a few you can look at or talk to in person. Below is a list of open houses offered by some of our camp sponsors in the coming weeks; these are great opportunities to talk to the people who would be spending the day with your kids. Click on a camp name to get more information about the camp's programs.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Parent Movie Review

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 02/03/2015 - 5:30pm

Taking my son to Paramount Studios on a school night to see the new SpongeBob movie is one of those little treats I enjoy being able to dole out as an LA parent. I knew I was scoring some high quality Mom Points, and I was not remotely surprised that my 11-year-old loved the film. What did surprise me was that I really enjoyed it, too! And I'll be brutally honest: I don't think I've ever uttered the name SpongeBob without making some kind of pained facial expression. I have a dad friend who has tried tirelessly to convert me to the Square Pants team, even citing parallels to Commedia dell'Arte, but the best I've ever managed is a polite smile. So with THAT context and background, it means a lot when I tell you that I really enjoyed The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Is it your family's cup of sea? I'll try to give you just enough info to help you decide, without spoiling any of the guffaws.

Smoke and Mirrors: a Play with a Magic Show up Its Sleeve

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Wed, 01/21/2015 - 4:52am

Not every play that we bring kids to needs to be a children's show. Just last week I brought my son to see the legendary Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit (partly because Ahmanson Hot Tix are cheaper than a babysitter), and he giggled himself blue in the face. And when Cirque du Soleil comes to town, it ain't cheap but a whole family can love it together. Fairy tales, puppets, and sing-alongs definitely have their place, but it can be a wonderful thing to find a play that the entire family can enjoy on different levels. Such a show is Smoke and Mirrors at The Odyssey, in which a master magician tells his personal story and performs some top-notch magic along the way.
