Family Whale Watching Cruise with the Aquarium of the Pacific: Thar She Blows!

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Wed, 08/10/2016 - 5:11am

Let me be clear about one thing: I am no sailor. I could get seasick on a surfboard. So achieving one of the biggest no-brainer Southern California bucket list items - going on a whale watch cruise - was a daunting prospect for me and one that I had postponed repeatedly, shamelessly telling myself that I was concerned that my son might get seasick. But when I heard recently that rare blue whales were being spotted daily off the coast of Long Beach, right in the middle of summer vacation, it seemed time to face my water demons; and I am so glad I did.

Cooling off in Public Swimming Pools on the Westside

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 08/09/2016 - 2:13pm

There are certain hot summer days when the sprinkler or the splash pad at the park just isn't enough, and the beach is a little too much—when only a swimming pool will do. Luckily the Westside has almost as many public pools as public beaches; kids can cool off with a splash at a different pool each day of the week! Most of the outdoor pools listed below are seasonal, and hours change throughout the summer. It's always advisable to call for the day's schedule before heading out.

10 Classic Outdoor Games from the '70s that It’s Time To Teach Your Kids

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Thu, 07/21/2016 - 10:30am

When folks talk about summers back in the day, they say things like, “We just went outside and played.” OK, but what did we play—anyone remember? We’ve got hundreds of ideas for playtime with your kids, but we especially love these throw-back games that used to keep us entertained until the streetlights came on. So Red Rover those neighborhood kids right on over and teach the whole crew a few of the games that the Brady brood played in their AstroTurf backyard!

Imaginary Invalid: A French Farce in Topanga for Summer Evening Giggles

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Fri, 07/15/2016 - 3:08pm

One of my favorite things about summer is outdoor theater. There is something magical about seeing a live show under the stars, and Topanga’s Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum has long been one of LA's most delightful places to experience this magic. The rustic theater’s Sunday morning program for young children is a summertime staple, but choosing the right show to share with bigger kids from the Botanicum's evening line-up can be trickier. It would be understandable to assume that you could skip the 17th century Moliere play, for example, but you’d be missing out on some major giggles—including the biggest collection of high-brow fart jokes I have ever witnessed. Scoff if you like, but any play that makes my middle schooler laugh himself breathless makes my recommend list.

Help Us Choose the Best of LA: Vote for Your Favorite Spots and Win!

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Fri, 05/27/2016 - 8:50pm

How do we love LA? Help us count the ways! We know that Los Angeles is the best place to raise kids, but even the best has its best. So we're counting on you, our Mommy Poppins readers and the most savvy parents we know, to help us pick the Best of LA. The best play spaces? We've got 'em. Family restaurants? We've got those, too. Swim classes, dance classes, and baby 'n' me? The greatest ones are all in sunny SoCal, along with the coolest theaters, museums, kindie bands, camps—heck, even our dentists are the best. But only you can tell us which is the best of the best, so we're asking you to vote for your favorites in all of these categories and more.

Of course, we know you're busy parents, so we've got some fantastic prizes lined up to thank you for sharing your expertise: how does a free bowling party at Lucky Strike sound? Or what about a family glamping trip at El Capitan Canyon? Or a year's worth of STEM activities delivered to your door? Or an Ojai Getaway? Give us 5 minutes and your expert opinions, then let us know which prize you'd prefer—it's a win-win for everyone!

Memorial Day Weekend Festivals and Parades for LA Families

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Fri, 05/27/2016 - 3:15am

Quick, hit the brakes—there's a three-day weekend just ahead! Memorial Day, the holiday generally considered the first harbinger of summer, is on the horizon, and the forecast is for one of those LA Story, 70s-and-sunny weekends. There's only one problem: you were so busy looking for summer camps that you forgot to book a campsite or a beach getaway, right? No worries—when your kids ask why you're not going anywhere this weekend, just tell them you're staying in town to catch some of the great Memorial Day festivals and parades that only happen once a year.

The Expo Line Arrives! Santa Monica to Downtown LA in 46 Minutes

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 05/17/2016 - 6:03pm

They've been working on the railroad—all the livelong decade, it feels like. There are kids in high school who have heard all their lives about the light rail someday reaching the sea. Well, this weekend, on May 20, 2016 to be exact, the Santa Monica extension of the Expo Line finally opens up, and people will be able to travel between the Pier and DTLA without touching their car keys. Los Angeles Metro is celebrating the much anticipated event with parties and free rides for everyone. In all, 7 new stations are opening up, so that's 7 parties with live music, food trucks, bounce houses, and other entertainment from Culver City to Santa Monica. Hop on a train, and pretty much anywhere you hop off, there'll be a party going on. Yes, that's how novel public transport is to people on the Westside of LA.

The free rides are on offer from noon on Friday through the end of Saturday. After that, riders need to have a TAP card ($1 in vending machines, $2 on buses or at retail locations) loaded up with enough credit for travel; each journey costs $1.75 ($1 for kids in grades K-12), including transfers. And the good news is that several new Big Blue Bus routes have been added to meet the train—as well as a few other creative ways to get to and from the station.
