Rose Parade Floats, Horses, and Bands—without Going to the Parade

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Sat, 01/02/2016 - 4:03am

If you live in SoCal, you probably know someone who has camped out all night in Pasadena to be on the spot New Year's Day for the Rose Parade. And if you have kids, you're probably not willing to do that yourself. But there are all sorts of ways to enjoy the Rose Parade without pitching a tent on the sidewalk. Some of these ways may even more fun than the parade itself, which many of us feel is best watched in PJs under a blanket on the sofa.

Love watching the horses? Check out Equestfest. Have a soft spot for marching bands? Bandfest is for you. And if you are intrigued by all of these enormous masterpieces made entirely out of flowers, seeds, and leaves, then the Post Parade Showcase of Floats could be a more satisfying experience than the parade itself. One thing is for sure: any of these belongs on a bucket list of things to do before your Angeleno kid grows up.

KURIOS at Dodger Stadium: Cirque du Soleil Goes Steampunk

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Sun, 12/13/2015 - 1:19am

It's a match made under the big top: If ever two creative forces were meant for each other, Cirque du Soleil and Steampunk must be the two—and KURIOS is the show that brings them together. All top hats, goggles, and time-traveling trampolines, the so-much-more-than circus comes swinging and spinning into DTLA to play its first engagement at Dodger Stadium. KURIOS is as memorable and innovative as we have come to expect from the Canadian troupe, and then some. Having seen a few Cirque productions before, I admit I didn't necessarily expect that we could be astonished again; I was looking forward to seeing the show, of course, and reporting on its family-friendly factor, but I figured there are only so many ways to bend, hang, and flip in fancy outfits. As it turns out, I was wrong; there is an infinite number of ways, and Cirque du Soleil never gets tired of finding them.

Veterans Day Activities for LA Kids

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Wed, 11/04/2015 - 10:33pm

Some folks have no problem figuring out what to do with a school holiday, and to those families we say, "Bon Vogage!" On the other hand, parents whose commitments don't allow for an early November getaway might want to find a meaningful day outing to celebrate Veterans Day or an entertaining childcare option to take the place of school. Either way, we've got suggestions!

Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns: Halloween at Santa Anita Racetrack and Descanso Gardens

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Fri, 10/16/2015 - 5:58pm

This post is from 2015. For current info see our 2016 post.

There are many levels of pumpkin carving. There's picking up a pumpkin at the grocery store and jabbing it with a knife until is makes a crooked smile. There's downloading a stencil and spending an afternoon with a $5 carving kit turning your pumpkin patch purchase into Jack Skellington. And then there's taking 5,000 fresh pumpkins per week and carving them into multi-gourd masterpieces never before conceived out of fruit. That last thing is what you'd call Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns.

The Rise, as those in the know call it, has been a popular Halloween event near NYC, on Long Island, for years; SoCal got its first peek at the hard-to-describe pumpkin phenomenon last year, when it moved into Descanso Gardens. This year The Rise is at two LA locations (adding the Santa Anita Race Track), as well as the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. And it is pretty darn different from any other Halloween event I've seen.

Wizards and Fools Halloween Magic Show at the NoHo Fringe Festival

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Thu, 10/15/2015 - 2:33pm

North Hollywood is on everyone's maps but not everyone's radar. The just barely Valley neighborhood has been experiencing a Renaissance over the past decade, growing into an arts hub proud of the nickname NoHo. The small theaters of the NoHo Arts District have banded together this year to establish the first ever NoHo Fringe Festival, which takes place throughout the month of October and into November, at a variety of venues. A few of the Fringe productions are family friendly, including one that couples Fringe with Halloween to create the uniquely October offering, Wizards and Fools.

Camp Spooky: Knott's Berry Farm's Halloween Haunt for Young Kids

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Sat, 10/10/2015 - 10:11pm

If you've got older kids (or a macabre Halloween side yourself), you know what a great job our LA and OC theme parks do of haunting those who love to be scared every October. But what about the kids who just like things mildly spooky - like maybe a couple of smiling ghosts and a spider or two? Sure, Disneyland has Mickey's Halloween Party, but that still involves staying up way past bedtime. If you have little ones you want to bring to a happy Halloween haunt without staying out past dark, where the scariest mummy looks suspiciously like Peppermint Patty, then Camp Spooky is the place you oughta be.

Ship Happens: Taking Kids To Visit the Queen Mary in Long Beach

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Mon, 10/05/2015 - 4:47pm

Half a century ago on Halloween, the ocean liner Queen Mary made her last luxurious journey across the Atlantic, then set off the long way around to the Pacific (she was too wide for the Panama Canal) and docked in her permanent resting place at the port in Long Beach, California. There she has sat ever since, alternately charming and frightening visitors year-round, a key shape in the Long Beach skyline. She looks pretty, but is there a reason to bring your family on board the Queen Mary for a visit? Is there enough to entertain kids? We spent an afternoon on board so that we could know what we're talking about when we say absolutely, yes.

Man Covets Bird at 24th Street Theatre: Parent Review of a Family Show

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Sun, 09/27/2015 - 2:53pm

There is a lot to love about 24th Street Theatre. The team behind this homey little playhouse is passionately devoted to education, to neighborhood outreach, and to a different kind of children's theater. Most of the the shows 24th Street produces are not public events, because the company devotes most of its resources to programming for local schools. But when this team decides to launch a public production, you can count on it being inventive and thought-provoking. 24th Street is not a place to see another Saturday morning Snow White; it's a place for ground-breaking theater that takes kids along for the ride. The last show we saw there, Walking the Tightrope, delighted so many families that Center Theater Group picked it up for an extended run. The company's latest production, Man Covets Bird, may follow the same path.
