This Tornado in a Bottle Experiment Is a Mind Twister for Kids

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Mon, 10/26/2020 - 11:07am

Create a water vortex for a simple experiment with exciting results!

Bring a tiny twister into your own house with this science experiment for kids. It's a pretty simple, hands-on science lesson with a fun payoff. Plus it involves water play, which is hard to resist for most kids.

All you need is two bottles, water, and a container to dump the water into. We also used a few Monopoly houses for visual effect and to conjure up images of the Wicked Witch of the West just before Halloween. If you like this experiment, try more of our 64 Easy Science Experiments for Kids to Do at Home.

Top DC Area Preschools: BASIS Independent McLean Balances Kids’ Curiosity with Academic Learning

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Thu, 10/15/2020 - 1:00pm

At BASIS Independent McLean’s Early Learning Program, students engage in STEM discovery, music, visual arts, Mandarin, and more.

An enriching high-quality early education is such a meaningful start, and BASIS Independent McLean’s Early Learning Program brings exactly that to families in the Northern Virginia area. Situated on a sprawling 11-acre campus in Tysons Corner—less than 15 miles outside of Washington D.C.—the age 2 through grade 12 private school helps lay a foundation for success with a world-acclaimed curriculum that thoughtfully balances kids' natural tendency to question, explore, and create with more formal academic instruction. And at the heart of it all is a deep love of learning, instilled in students by nurturing and compassionate expert teachers.

If you'd like to learn more about the Early Learning Program at BASIS Independent McLean, read on or sign up for an upcoming virtual open house.

A number of Chicago's outdoor adventure parks are open from spring into the fall. These parks offer zip lines, aerial ropes courses, suspended bridges, and sometimes climbing walls, too.

Many of these adventure parks could become part of a larger weekend trip or a special birthday trip, especially when your Chicago kid finally hits the height requirement!

MiSight 1 day Contact Lenses Can Help Kids 8-12 Manage Eye Health

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Thu, 10/01/2020 - 11:00am

As we all embark on the school year, let's not forget about the importance of eye health. Most eye doctors recommend that kids get a comprehensive eye exam each year to help identify any possible conditions. Children diagnosed with nearsightedness or "myopia"—a common condition that makes distance vision blurry—may be able to benefit from advances in myopia management that slow its progression, making early diagnosis that much more meaningful.

Read on to find out what parents need to know to ensure their kids are getting the best eye care for lifelong vision health—and to learn about Brilliant Futures™ Myopia Management Program with MiSight® 1 day contact lenses, a new option available for age appropriate children dealing with myopia.

10 Sensory Bin Ideas for Busy Toddlers

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Thu, 08/27/2020 - 11:37am

Create a colorful, texturized world with a DIY sensory bin. Photo by Emma Graig

Toddlers and young children are notorious for getting into everything, especially with their hands. They grab, lunge, and just generally stick their hands into whatever you don't want them to, right? That's one of the reasons I love creating sensory bins for toddlers. It's a nice way to redirect all that crazy toddler energy into something totally fun and (mostly) contained.

Besides, it's a great way for little kids to learn, by actually touching and experiencing something. I've gathered up 10 sensory bin ideas that parents can easily create at home using basic household items. Some employ water, others use soft things or even items that make a sound. Once you discover which sensory bin most appeals to your kid, you might also just have discovered some new free time and a little independent playtime for your youngster.

For more tips on dealing with sensory issues, see our posts on 99 Sensory Activities for Toddlers, Infants, and Kids of All Ages, DIY Sensory Activities for Babies, and Sensory Savvy Snacks for Kids.

Local Businesses in the Chicago-Area to Support During the Pandemic

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Tue, 05/12/2020 - 3:39pm

Chicago-area families are starting to miss their favorite stores and restaurants right now, and with at least two and a half more weeks left in the stay-at-home order, many local businesses are missing their customers, too. We've already listed lots of small, local toy stores and bookstores delivering to locals, and by now, you may have enjoyed Mother's Day brunch for pick up or delivery from one of our local picks too. Many of these local restaurants are catering to families every day.

Lots of other local businesses in Chicago still need a boost. We've rounded up 19 small businesses working hard to keep their doors open, while also helping to support our community, and we're hoping you can lend your support in return. Remember: It's best to order directly from the small businesses rather than a third-party delivery service whenever possible. Purchasing gift cards to use later is another great way to shop small and help these local businesses thrive now and in the future.

And while you're showing your support for the businesses you love, we hope you'll count Mommy Poppins and our small business partners among them. You can support Mommy Poppins by sharing articles you find useful with friends or on your social media channels, checking out our directory of virtual classes, camps, and birthday parties and telling businesses you found them through Mommy Poppins. Also, as part of our effort to keep our local parent writers and this website afloat and support some of our favorite family businesses, we've created Poppins@Home, a platform for small businesses to share free and low-cost online classes and birthday parties with kids all over the country. Please consider trying a few of these fun, affordable, and creative classes—and spreading the word among your friends—as yet another way to support, uplift, and get through these challenging times together!

Seasons 52 offers curb-side pick-up for its delicious Easter menu. Photo courtesy of the restaurant
Families may not be able to get together in person for Easter brunch or Easter dinner this year. However, Chicagoans can still enjoy a decadent meal from a variety of local restaurants. Outsourcing your Easter menu to one of these eateries to prepare the ham, prime rib, lamb, or even a moussaka can take the stress off quarantined parents and leave time for the Easter bunny to make his annual visit. Some venues also offer their wine and cocktail menu for takeout and delivery patrons.
