Is it officially spring yet? No one knows for sure if the last snow of the season is officially behind us in Chicago, but we do know that plenty of fun events await as kids approach spring break and the end of the school year. Flower shows are back in full force with Chicago Botanic Gardens showing off its orchids, Garfield Park Conservatory offering up playful plant-themed knock-knock jokes, and Lincoln Park Conservatory standing tall with its pillars of spring. Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals are another popular theme of Chicago's spring events, with the Field Museum giving kids a chance to Doze with the Dinos, Kid Works Children's Museum hosting a weeklong Dino Works event, and Brookfield Zoo following up its Dinos Everywhere show with an animatronic Ice Age Giants exhibit. And plays and music based on books and fairy tales ignite the minds of kids throughout the city: Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents Jack and the Beanstalk; Chicago Children's Theater is putting on Carmela Full of Wishes based on a recent picture book, and Chicago Kids Theatre acts out modern versions of Rapunzel and the The Ugly Duckling.

Chicago is known as The Third Coast because of its gorgeous Lake Michigan skyline, but another body of water brings beauty to the city as well. The Chicago River and the Riverwalk that has developed along its banks has become a destination for tourists and locals alike, especially in the warm summer months when visitors can dine outside. Operable drawbridges and CTA trains that cross the river add extra interest to the area for kids.

Some of the best restaurants on the river in Chicago operate only from April or May through October, while others are year-round fixtures. They become destinations during major events like the dyeing of the Chicago River and the Chicago Marathon, but they're truly relaxing at any time of year. Try to make a reservation at one of these top-notch riverfront restaurants in Chicago for the best results!

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Sun, 01/23/2022 - 11:55am

Kids will have a hard time deciding between all the delicious treats at Dinkel's, the 100 year old Bavarian bakery

The Loop is great... for going to work or being a tourist. But for those looking to see some of the other 76 neighborhoods in Chicago, we've got the inside track on more fun things to do with kids. Just west of Wrigleyville and north of the hipstery Bucktown neighborhood are two of our favorite neighborhoods in Chicago: Roscoe Village and North Center. There are also a few fun new venues and restaurants in the area that appeal to more adventurous families.

Best Things To See and Do at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Fri, 01/21/2022 - 8:20am

Founded in 1868, Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is one of the oldest zoos in the country, and one of the last zoos that offers free entry. The zoo's combination of outdoor and indoor exhibits, along with its location near lots of other things to do in Lincoln Park not far from the beach, make it a great destination for families looking for some easy entertainment.

Lincoln Park Zoo has recently received an exciting update: The zoo's original Lion House was opened in 1912, housing big cats in a beautifully designed and built building—one that became dated and less animal friendly over time. In December 2019, the zoo, with the help of donations from the Pepper Family, started construction on a new habitat for it cats—the Pepper Family Wildlife Center.

Read on for an introduction to the new Center, plus lots of other tips for visiting Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo with kids. And for more animal adventures, check out our Best Zoos and Aquariums in Chicago.

Best Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks for Chicago Kids and Families

One perk of the long, cold winters in Chicago is the chance to glide across the ice at the many beautiful outdoor skating rinks throughout the city and suburbs—many of them FREE. Not all ice skating rinks in Chicago need polar-vortex temperatures to stay open; some refrigerated rinks are available for skating as long as the temperature is less than 40 degrees. Many rinks offer hockey, broomball, figure skating, or speed skating programs. And not all rinks are your standard oval, either: Maggie Daley Park’s Skating Ribbon lets figure skaters enjoy a different kind of figure 8.

For all the details on where to enjoy ice skating in Chicago, read on. And for more winter activities to enjoy with your family, check out our Winter Activities Guide.
