The Land Before Time: How to Do Chicago's Field Museum with Kids

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Sun, 08/22/2021 - 5:10pm

The Field Museum is home to some of the country's most complete dinosaur skeletons.

When Chicagoans list their favorite and most iconic museums, The Field Museum of Natural History is often among the top choices. It’s also one of the museums that’s been here the longest, after officially being incorporated as a museum in 1893 after it served as an exhibit hall in the Columbian Exposition. Chicago parents returning to the museum will recognize many of the exhibits they saw as kids. But The Field also hosts a series of rotating exhibits, including one that turned out to be my kids’ favorite.  “Becoming Jane:  The Evolution of Jane Goodall”  sparked an interest in both animals and stories about powerful women for my daughter.

We had planned to visit The Field Museum in the first half of 2020, but shortly after our visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in February, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the city, and the world. We visited just as the city was reopening in June 2021, and some changes from the pandemic are still around. Plan on wearing a mask, using a digital map on your phone or one posted on the walls of the museum, and buying your ticket in advance. The museum has also placed hand sanitizers throughout its building to help people keep clean. And if you have a preschooler or toddler, you’re going to need it because of the buttons. They’re going to want to push Every. Single. Button.

We loved going to see some old favorites for us, and finding some new gems with our little ones. Here’s what we think are the best parts of The Field Museum for kids. And if you like this article, don't forget to check out our other recommendations for museums.

If you're staying in town and plan to visit multiple attractions in the Chicago area (we’re looking at you, people with visiting relatives you’ll be squiring around town), it’s worth it to look into a Go City - Chicago  sightseeing pass to save money on entrance fees to attractions like the Navy Pier, Field Museum, the aquarium, and the planetarium.

The Chicago Public School Calendar for the 2021-2022 school year is below, and you'll want to bookmark it now for reference—and to help with planning family vacations and school break camp coverage.

It’s Time To "Gogh" Out Again: Enjoying Immersive Van Gogh in Chicago with Kids

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Sun, 06/13/2021 - 8:28am

Immerse yourself in a Starry Night.

It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to go to a museum or enjoy an art exhibit. Part of that is due to the pandemic, but the other part is, well, kids. But now museums are opening and art experiences like Immersive Van Gogh Chicago, are popping up across the city and suburbs (check them out on our calendar), giving parents the perfect opportunity to enjoy something for themselves while also giving kids a unique artistic experience. My family decided to "Gogh" check it out, and I've got all the tips for making sure the whole family has a great time.

Best Beaches in Chicago for Families

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Sun, 05/30/2021 - 10:01am

Check out these Chicago beaches for summer day trip destinations.

Who says you need an ocean to go to the beach? Chicago families can get their swimming fix by taking advantage of the “Midwest Coast” of Lake Michigan, or the many smaller lakes (and even repurposed former quarries) dotted throughout the suburbs. The best Chicago beaches for families include easy parking, bathrooms with changing facilities, concession stands for little snackers, and maybe a playground for when kids get tired of the water. Pack up your favorite beach gear and hit one of the best family-friendly beaches in Chicago and the suburbs.

What's Open in Chicago for Kids Right Now

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Fri, 02/12/2021 - 7:34am

Can you trust your eyes at the Museum of Illusions? Photo by Jody Mercier

We are open! Or at least, working on it... All regions of Illinois are now in Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois Plan—almost all businesses, restaurants, and even indoor play spaces are allowed to open, with limited capacity. It can be a little tricky to know what has opened already, what is about to, and what the rules are. So we prepared a list of all the fabulous places that are now open in Chicago where you can take your kids. We've also tracked what safety measures these places are taking, and anything else families need to know before visiting (like if a destination requires or recommends buying tickets or making reservations online before you go).

We've all learned how quickly things can change (and in Chicago there's always the possibility of places closing because of extreme cold or snow), so please double-check before bundling kids up and loading them in the car.

Drive-thru Christmas Lights and Holiday Displays Open in Chicago

Submitted by Maureen Wilkey on Sun, 11/01/2020 - 11:23am

See trees in a different light at a reimagined Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum.

Christmas can still be a bright spot in this frequently dark year; several drive-through Christmas lights displays are coming to the Chicago area for the 2020 holiday season.

The new Let It Shine holiday lights show debuts in north suburban Northbrook on November 15 with LED lights synchronized to classic holiday music that families can listen to in their cars. But that's just the beginning.
