In the heart of Texas, you’ll find a waterpark like none other. Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort at New Braunfels was designed by a family for families and around the beautiful Comal River. Instead of vistas filled with brightly-colored plastic and umbrellas, this waterpark embraces its natural surroundings, and it’s why you need to add this park to your family travel bucket list.

Carrie Taylor's picture Submitted by Carrie Taylor on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 9:00am

Libraries are not just for cramming-for-test college students or baby storytimes; if you aren't taking advantage of the many resources your neighborhood library has to offer, you've got to start now! It's time to dust off that library card (or go get one - it's super easy, and all you need to be is a Texas resident, older than 18, and have a valid ID) and check out the many freebies that come with it. While this list links specifically to the city of Houston Public Library resources, know that if you live closest to county libraries they offer identical services often using similar providers. Just ask your nearest librarian!

Carrie Taylor's picture Submitted by Carrie Taylor on Thu, 12/07/2017 - 1:35am

Houston families, we asked you to tell us your favorite businesses around the city, and you've been heard. Our inaugural Houston Besties sought to find the best family businesses and resources in categories that range from best restaurants, parties, activities, and more. With all the great family fun experiences and resources around Houston, it was hard to choose just 24, but you were up to the task. Each winner was selected from a competitive crop of 10 nominees in each category.

Before we announce our winners, we'd like to thank our Bestie Sponsors, including Sublime Travel and Sweet Pecks Photography. And congratulations to the lucky voters who were picked at random to enjoy some amazing prizes!

The votes are finally in, and we couldn't be more excited about our winners. We've grouped them into three winning categories: Parenting Resources, Enrichment Programs, and Family Fun.

Without further ado, here is your guide to the best of family-friendly Houston, the 2017 Houston Besties!

Where to See and Take Photos with Santa in Houston

Carrie Taylor's picture Submitted by Carrie Taylor on Fri, 11/17/2017 - 6:15pm

My family's holiday traditions wouldn't be complete without the annual torture session that is photos with Santa. Whether your children are like mine and find Santa to be the most terrifying being they've ever encountered, or you are among the lucky few to end up with smiling faces, photos with Santa is a holiday staple. If you are interested in spending more time with the big man in red, check out an area breakfast or brunch with Santa. And for all things holidays in Houston, visit our activity and event guide.

Without further ado, here is where you will find Saint Nick this year in Houston.

Family Camping at Bastrop State Park

Carrie Taylor's picture Submitted by Carrie Taylor on Thu, 11/09/2017 - 6:21pm

About two hours northwest of Houston is the beautiful Bastrop State Park, and it's a campground I've enjoyed visiting for as long as I can remember. Although the Bastrop of my childhood no longer exists, the park is rising from the ashes after the 2011 Bastrop County Complex wildfire. There is evidence of new life and growth everywhere you look.

My family and I most recently camped here in mid-October (sadly, it was still scorchingly hot), and had a great time with our kids; a 3-year-old and 1-year-old. Read on for what you can expect, from activities to the best hiking trails.
