Emily's Sugar Rush: NYC Kids Can Feed Their Sweet Tooth at this Queens Candy Shop

8/8/11 - By Katy

Unfortunately, Emily's Sugar Rush closed in October 2014. We're big fans of old-fashioned candy stores piled high with colorful, high-calorie treats. Every time a new one pops up, we drop by to savor the items and the atmosphere.

We were particularly excited to check out Emily's Sugar Rush, a retro sweet spot that opened in Forest Hills, Queens in May. While our neighborhood has several bakeries and a few ice cream shops, drugstore candy was the only option for those of us with a hardcore sweet tooth until Emily's came along.

Owners and longtime Forest Hills residents Ingrid and David Broderick named their corner candy shop after their eight-year-old daughter. All three of them love sugary treats, and they offer plenty of that at Emily's, which is a veritable jar- and barrel-filled candy heaven, sprinkled with plenty of quirky newfangled treats and small gifts to boot.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

The shop is focused on all things sugar, along with a small selection of sugar-free treats. There is an incredible variety of gourmet gummy bears, my personal favorite, from fresh strawberry to ripe watermelon. The bears are separated by flavor, and they're big, soft, and not too sticky. Other items include gum balls, M&M's, more than 40 flavors of jelly beans and other goodies for $10.99 per pound.

On a nostalgia kick? Emily's carries the candy we loved in our youth. The sight of Pop Rocks and Pixy Stix took me straight back to 1988. (Too bad my metabolism didn’t get the memo.)

In addition to candy, Emily’s also sells cake by the slice, chocolate dipped fruits and cookies, and truffles imported from a Napa Valley winery. With prices from $2.75 per truffle to $15.99 per pound for chocolate dipped orange slices, these aren’t child’s play.

Emily’s also stocks plenty of wacky goods. The shop has a New York City exclusive on a full line of (creepy!) Vamplet dolls, plus True Blood drinks and candy "medicines" to cure your cravings.

Although there aren't specific party packages in place yet, Emily’s is available to host events. Call the store (there's no website yet) and the owners will help create your party, from baby showers to birthdays. As tempting as it sounds I admit, I can’t imagine letting my toddler (let alone a group of her friends) loose in a room full of eye-level glass and sugar.

Emily’s Sugar Rush is now closed.
