From turkey legs and jousting to fairies and fire-whip shows, Texas Ren Fest is a fun-filled, immersive experience my family looks forward to year after year.

The Texas Renaissance Festival is back for its 51st season and, whether you’re first-timers or big fans, you’ll want to make sure it’s at the top of your fall bucket list. Held at “New Market Village” in Todd Mission–about an hour northwest of Houston–the largest and most acclaimed Renaissance-themed attraction in the county goes down every weekend from now through the end of November, including the long Thanksgiving weekend.

As a Houston mom, Texas Ren Fest has been a beloved annual tradition for my family ever since my oldest was in a stroller, so here’s everything parents need to know, based on years of personal experience.

Texas Renaissance Festival: What You Need to Know

What ages is Texas Ren Fest good for?

The festival is truly designed for all ages. Toddlers will love the colorful costumes, lively music, and the daily parade. School-age kids will be drawn to the hands-on activities, tabletop games, and thrilling shows. Meanwhile, tweens and teens will get a kick out of the more interactive attractions like the Dragon Forge blacksmithing adventure and the themed (and air-conditioned) Escape Rooms.

Do you have to dress in costume?

Not at all! Costumes are completely optional. We rarely dress up in full costumes, but we almost always end up buying something fun inside the gates—flower crowns, elf ears, wizard wands, or even pirate accessories.

If your kids love dressing up, consider visiting during one of the themed weekends, like “Pirate Adventure,” “Heroes and Villains,” or “1001 Dreams” for fans of fairies and elves.

What are the best Ren Fest shows for kids?

Our favorite family-friendly shows are the Birds of Prey demonstration, where majestic hawks and falcons soar just overhead, and the Fire Whip Show, which combines jaw-dropping stunts, flames, and a fun dose of comedy that always gets the crowd laughing. Both shows are usually scheduled back-to-back, making it easy to catch them in one stretch.

The jousting matches are another classic, where kids can cheer for knights in armor. And don’t skip the daily parade—it’s full of music, costumed characters, and big energy that kids love.

Are there other activities specifically for kids?

Yes, and there’s no shortage! Areas like the Enchanted Forest and Arena Area are packed with activities designed just for children–although parents can definitely get in on the fun too. Little adventurers can soar on a giant swing, climb rock walls, and bounce on bungee trampolines. There are also playful “jousting” horse rides, face painting stations, and even wax hand casting stands for a fun take-home souvenir. See all of the festival’s kid-friendly activities here.

Is the food kid-friendly?

Absolutely. While turkey legs are the festival’s most iconic treat, there’s also pizza, chicken tenders, fresh-cut fries, giant pretzels, and funnel cake. My personal favorite is the fresh kettle corn—we always grab a bag and usually end up taking some home.

For an extra-special dining experience, you can also book High Tea or Renaissance Tea at Tea & Strumpets. The elevated tearoom overlooking the faire serves up tiny sandwiches, sweet treats, and bottomless tea–plus offers a kids’ menu.

For adults, there’s a great selection of international cuisine, from Greek and Polish food to classic barbecue, plus several spots to enjoy a beer or glass of wine while you explore.

Can we bring strollers or wagons?

Yes—and if you have young kids, I highly recommend it! The festival grounds are large and the terrain can be uneven in places, so strollers with all-terrain wheels or wagons work best. Wagons are also great for carrying snacks, extra clothes, and tired little ones by the end of the day.

How long should we plan to stay at the Festival?

Plan for at least half the day, although many families make it from open to close. Arriving early means you’ll avoid the longest entry lines and get better parking. It also gives you time to see the shows at a comfortable pace, grab food, and explore without feeling rushed.

Tips for Visiting with Texas Ren Fest with Kids

  • Arrive early: You’ll snag closer parking, beat the crowds, and catch the morning shows while it's still cooler out. The gates open at 9:00 am, and there’s usually plenty happening right from the start of the day.
  • Pack the essentials: Make sure to bring sunscreen, hats, layers for cooler mornings and nights, and one unopened bottle of water per person (just note that additional outside food and drinks are not allowed). Staying comfortable makes a big difference, especially with little ones in tow.
  • Bring cash and cards: While most vendors accept credit and debit cards, a few are cash-only. ATMs are available, but it’s always easier to have small bills on hand for snacks and quick purchases.
  • Don’t try to do it all in one visit: The festival is huge, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Pick two or three shows you really want to see, let the kids lead the way through the activity areas, and take breaks as needed.
  • Consider starting with a souvenir: My favorite hack… Let the kids pick out a small souvenir or costume piece once you arrive. Whether it’s a fairy wand, a hand-crafted baby dragon, or a fox tail, it’s a low-stress way to get right into the spirit of the festival—plus, no one will be begging you for a toy the whole day!

Plan Your Visit to the Texas Renaissance Festival

The festival is open Saturdays and Sundays through November 30th–plus Thanksgiving Friday–from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (no entry after 7:00 pm). Tickets can be purchased at The Kingdom gates on the day of the Ren Fest but, for the best prices, you’ll want to purchase your tickets in advance online. Keep in mind that tickets are date specific but, for an additional $5, you can add exchange insurance in case of bad weather or changed plans. Parking is free, although preferred and valet parking are also available for a fee.

Kids 4 and under are FREE every day, while those ages 5 to 12 are FREE on Sundays only. Adults need a general admission ticket, although note that there are discounts available for military, first responders, government employees, and educators.

Head to texrenfest.com for current ticket prices, themed weekend details, and show schedules. And enjoy one of Houston’s most memorable fantastical attractions!
