Tips for a Great Pool Day with Kids

Don't Forget the Basics

Remember to bring sunscreen, towels, sun hats, goggles, and a change of clothes for each child (and yourself, if you're swimming). Non-slip shoes are also a good idea for when kids need the bathroom or are using the splash pads at some of these DC family pools. Swim diapers are required for kids who aren't yet potty trained.

Pack Plenty of Food and Water

While many of these free public swimming pools in DC have concession stands, they can be costly and may even have long lines. So pack lunches, snacks, and water bottles.

Call for Updates

It's a good idea to call these free pools for DC kids before you go to make sure they're open, as they sometimes need to close for various reasons. You can also ask their policies on pool floats and toys.

Safety Tips when Visiting Free Public Swimming Pools in DC

Dress Kids in Bright Bathing Suits

This will help you keep a close on your kids while they swim, and make it easier to spot them in a crowd.

Stay Within Arm's Reach of Non-Swimmers

If your child cannot yet swim or isn't a strong swimmer, always stay within reach of them in the pool. Do not rely on life vests, swimmies, or even lifeguards to keep them safe.

Stay Vigilant

Sometimes it's easier for kids to drown when there are more adults present, because everyone thinks someone else is watching the children. So even if you're not in the pool, make sure you can always see your kids. If you're with a group of kids, adults can take turns being the "water watcher."
