Looking for something new and cool to do with the kids during winter break? Five minutes south of downtown, you’ll find the North Texas’ latest art exhibition, Balloon Museum Dallas: “Let’s Fly – Art Has No Limits.” I had a chance to visit this immersive experience last week, and I can honestly say that I was blown away (pun intended). It’s hard to describe what you’ll find when you walk through the doors; a simple explanation doesn’t do it justice. This is something you’ll need to see firsthand, so if you’re looking for something to do with the kids in Dallas over the holiday season, consider scheduling a time to see it yourself.

What Will You Find at Balloon Museum Dallas?

Founded in Rome, Italy, in 2021, Balloon Museum Dallas is all about combining creativity with technology and sensory exploration with the one natural element we can feel and hear but cannot see or taste—air. It’s 65,000 square feet of art installations that range from what feels like a bounce house to a chance to become part of the art itself. There are plenty of actual balloons, but more so, it’s a chance to challenge how air can be used in ways you’ve never considered before.

My favorite pieces were “Mariposa,” by Christopher Schardt, where, from a cozy spot on cushions or on the two-person swing, you’ll watch a giant LED butterfly move from one color pattern to the next choreographed to music, “The Ginjos,” by Rub Kandy, which feels like a mix between a black light room and a clown bop bag, and “Hyperlight,” by Hyperstudo, which features a giant balloon pit filled with 1,000,000 black ballons, 500,000 floating black balloons, disco balls, and an audio-visual show worthy of my club days ways back in the early aughts.

Is the Balloon Museum Dallas Kid-Friendly?

Yes! This immersive art exhibition is very family-friendly. While there are a few hands-off installations, many of the rooms feature inflatables, encourage patrons to engage with the artwork, and offer tons of photo opportunities for all ages. Kids will particularly love swinging the geometric pendulum-like spheres in “Swing Artist” by Motrefisico and being caught up in the tornado that is “Invisible Ballet Artist,” by Hyperstudio with Mauro Pace, where hundreds of singularly colored balloons swoop, twirl, and turn in a whirlwind of a crafted airstream.

A fair warning—it'll be hard to exit the exhibit without the kids begging for some balloon art of their own, an adorable stuffed version of The Ginjos, or a snack from the cafeteria that you'll find at the end of the exhibit.

This experience for all ages; it takes about 1.5 hours to experience all the installations, and strollers are not allowed in the exhibition rooms.

Where Is Balloon Museum Dallas Located?
