Submitted by Rosalind Muggeridge on Tue, 05/29/2018 - 10:00am

Families in Yonkers and up the Hudson can climb aboard a river adventure to see molten glass take shape before our very eyes. A boat that serves as classroom, workshop, and history lesson, The Corning Museum of Glass's first ever floating exhibit, GlassBarge, has set sail for four months through nearly 30 communities en route to a homecoming celebration in Corning, NY. We got a sneak peek when it set off from Brooklyn, where glass and kids' minds were equally blown.

Though there are amazing photo-ops around every intriguing corner of this whimsical, interactive art installation, Dream Machine in Brooklyn actually encourages visitors to let go of this dimension for a while and step into a space that feels...otherworldly.

Best Family Festivals and Street Fairs in NYC This May

There are street fairs—and then there are street fairs. We don't mean those random ones selling irregular socks and fried Oreos; we're talking about true community festivals. Each one is unique, reflecting the character of its neighborhood, and many feature rides, performances, activities, and food. The hard part, of course, is knowing which is which, but don't worry, we've taken the guesswork out of it for you.

We've gone through the city's list of top annual festivals, street fairs, and carnivals and put together our roundup of top picks for May—more than two dozen. Most of these fetes are FREE or cost just a couple of bucks, and in many cases your dollars go to support a local charity or school. Here are some awesome fests happening in NYC this May.

You can find even more seasonal activities in our Spring Fun Guide.

Things to Do with Kids Presidents Day Weekend in NYC: Balloons, Lunar Parades, Lego Live

New York City kids are kicking off their February school break with a jam-packed Presidents Day weekend. Chinese Lunar New Year events rev up this weekend with festivals and parades in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, but there's also the lesser-known (but just as festive) Japanese Snow Festival and the Himalayan New Year celebration at the Rubin Museum just for families.

The city marks Presidents Day with family events, such as an oppportunity to meet "President" George Washingtion and First Lady Martha and more historical figures at the New-York Historical Society, as well as the uptown Washington's Birthday Ball. Black history events run throughout the month, and we've flagged this weekend's The Langston Hughes Project concert as a must-see.

But this weekend also boasts the first NYC Lego Live, and some more unusual events to check out like a citywide, FREE Sword Dance Festival and the balloon-filled New York City Ballet atrium at Lincoln Center, an art installation from Jihan Zencirli Geronimo. Plus, The Gruffalo Live opens for little theatergoers, and there are more great shows playing.

Don't miss the kickoff to February break week activities, including Kids Week at the Intrepid and Engineering Week at NYSCI.

We've also got you covered for the rest of the cold-weather season with our Museum and Indoor Play Space Guides. If you'd rather escape the city for a day, check out our picks for the Best Winter Day Trips. As always, the Event Calendar, February GoList, and Free February Fun list have even more ideas for family-friendly activities in the Big Apple.
