Anna Fader

Founder of Mommy Poppins

A fourth-generation Brooklynite, Anna started Mommy Poppins in 2007 to help families find the best things to do with kids in NYC, with a particular emphasis on sharing activities that are free, affordable, and enriching. The site, used by millions of families, has grown to become the ultimate resource for parents in the major US cities, plus travel guides for 100s of destinations.

Anna is a believer in the magic of summer camps, traveling with kids, and that you can raise kids on a budget and still have a rich life full of amazing memories. Anna's first Mommy Poppins book, The Young Traveler's Journal and Activity Book, published in 2025 and co-written with her daughter, Amelia Eigerman, brings that ethos to life, in addition to this website.

37 Kid-Friendly Restaurants and Snack Spots for Beachy Summer Eats in NYC

Submitted by Anna Fader on Sun, 08/05/2018 - 12:00pm

The frozen Swingle (a mini key lime pie covered in chocolate) from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies is summer on a stick.

If anything redeems the humidity and heat of a NYC summer it’s got to be all the great summer eats. Our family can’t get enough of seafood boils, barbecue, tacos, lobster rolls, and frozen treats. Add a beachy outdoor dining vibe, and dinner out becomes a mini vacation.

New York City has so many great kid-friendly outdoor dining spots, it's hard to choose the best, but this summer foods must-eat bucket list will help you pack in some serious seasonal outdoor dining before sweater weather sets in. Read on to find my picks for the best kid-friendly restaurants in NYC to get your summer vibes on.

Feast Your Way Through the Best Food at the Queens Night Market

Submitted by Anna Fader on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 10:00am

Takoyaki are Japanese octopus balls. Made here by Karl's Balls.

Outdoor food markets and indoor food halls seem to be popping up everywhere in NYC, but the Queens International Night Market is different from others. Fashioned after night markets in Asia, it focuses on the incredible diversity of global flavors that have been making Queens famous as one of the best places to eat in the world.

I’m surprised how many people don’t know about this foodie market. It’s one of my favorite things! The event is family-friendly and even pet-friendly. There’s live entertainment, games, and food stalls representing 80 different countries. Best of all? It's inexpensive. It truly is like traveling the world in one night, although it’d be hard to taste everything in one evening.

Read on for details on the 2018 lineup for this seasonal Flushing Meadows Corona Park food festival.

Lower East Side Food Crawl: Best Old School NYC Eats

Submitted by Anna Fader on Fri, 05/04/2018 - 10:00am

Feel like a kid in a candy store at Economy Candy.

The Lower East Side is emblematic of everything we think of "Old New York," especially the hustle and bustle of a working class immigrant neighborhood. Although many immigrant populations called the neighborhood home, the Lower East Side became home base for New York City’s Jewish population. The Lower East Side is now much more hipster than Hebrew and most of the old establishments have been spruced up, but it’s still an amazing neighborhood to explore...and eat in. Oh my, can you eat!

From knishes to candy, pastrami to pickles, there’s so much good food on offer it’s hard to know where to begin. But most of all, it’s fun to eat in places with tons of history and "theater." Whether you want to do it as a food crawl with the kids or just go down for one family meal, we’ve covered the best old-school, mostly Jewish food spots on the Lower East Side.

The Water Safety Skills That Could Save Your Child's Life This Summer

Submitted by Anna Fader on Thu, 05/03/2018 - 10:00am

FACT: Most kids who drown were supervised. Let that sink in. While accidents do happen from babies being left alone in tubs or a toddler falling into an unattended pool, the most common way is while grown-ups are around, but not paying attention.

According to the CDC, drowning is the second leading cause of injury death for children ages one to 14. It is the number one cause for children four and under! And thousands more are hospitalized for these incidents.

Greenpoint, Brooklyn Food Crawl: Best Polish Restaurants and Fun Spots

Submitted by Anna Fader on Tue, 03/13/2018 - 11:05am

If you’ve been itching to try to decipher signage in a foreign language, step into a market that smells like 15 kinds of sausage, and stuff your face with foods from the Old World, then all you and the kids need to do is hop on over to Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Somehow, despite the fact that neighboring Williamsburg has become the poster child for rampant development and gentrification, Greenpoint has managed to maintain its charm and Polish flavor. That’s not to say that the neighborhood hasn’t changed or that skyrocketing rents haven’t impacted local families, but many of the shops along Greenpoint’s main drag, Manhattan Avenue, are still locally owned markets and restaurants often specialize in Polish foods. If you have Eastern European roots, locals might even address you in Polish. All this makes a day in Greenpoint feel like a trip to the Old Country.

Greenpoint is just one of many ethnic foodie thoroughfares in the city. We aim to help you travel the world airfare-free with the Mommy Poppins Passport Series. We'll spotlight the best international streets in all five boroughs. Introduce kids to the diverse food and fun that immigrants have brought to New York City’s streets, including in Astoria, Manhattan's Chinatown, and even at a Queens mall.

Is Axe-Throwing Brooklyn’s Newest Kid-Friendly Activity?

Submitted by Anna Fader on Fri, 03/02/2018 - 10:45am

As you step into Kick Axe Throwing, you will be forgiven for a momentary flash of jealousy pointed at the pretty young things hanging out and drinking beers with their friends in the hipster-chic log cabin–themed spot. New York’s first axe throwing venue is the perfect place for beers with your buds, but I was here to determine if it was equally cool action spot to take kiddos.

Technically, children aged 7 and up are allowed to participate, so, to test the waters, I had come to Gowanus, Brooklyn with an 8-year-old, a 12-year-old, and a 14-year-old, ready to chuck axes. Consent forms signed, we met our Axpert in the waiting area and headed with anticipation to our axe-throwing range.

LEGOLAND Beach Retreat was one of the top openings of 2017. Photo courtesy of LEGOLAND.

Family destinations really upped their game in 2017. We saw amazing new attractions at some of our favorite amusement parks, the opening of the largest indoor water park in the US, and the opening of the brand new Dr. Seuss Museum. LEGOLAND's new Beach Resort is so awesome it went right into our list of mind-blowing kid-friendly hotels, and technology brought us a whole new way to go camping. Our writers have been busy checking them all out and sharing insider tips. Speaking of insiders, our new Disney experts gave us the scoop on visiting California's Disneyland with a baby or without.
