Anna Fader

Founder of Mommy Poppins

A fourth-generation Brooklynite, Anna started Mommy Poppins in 2007 to help families find the best things to do with kids in NYC, with a particular emphasis on sharing activities that are free, affordable, and enriching. The site, used by millions of families, has grown to become the ultimate resource for parents in the major US cities, plus travel guides for 100s of destinations.

Anna is a believer in the magic of summer camps, traveling with kids, and that you can raise kids on a budget and still have a rich life full of amazing memories. Anna's first Mommy Poppins book, The Young Traveler's Journal and Activity Book, published in 2025 and co-written with her daughter, Amelia Eigerman, brings that ethos to life, in addition to this website.

Five Reasons to Love House Swapping

Submitted by Anna Fader on Thu, 08/15/2013 - 10:37pm

#familytravel

Traveling with a family can be hard. You have to negotiate everyone's needs, children don't always adjust to new surroundings or schedules easily and have frequent and sometimes finicky eating and other needs, and it's just plain expensive. The easiest way to solve many of these problems is to rent a home rather than staying in a hotel. While hotels are lovely, houses give you a lot more room and comfort and amenities that families really need, like a kitchen and possibly laundry, toys, and other kid-friendly gear. Renting a home can be less expensive than a nice hotel, but it could also be costly. One way to get all the comforts of a home without the expense is house swapping. I'm a big fan of house swapping and have done several vacations this way. House swapping is more than a form of accommodation, it's a way of life. Here's what I love about traveling this way:

Staten Island Yankees: A Kid-Centric Way to Go to a Ballgame

Submitted by Anna Fader on Mon, 08/12/2013 - 10:00am

While the New York Yankees and Mets get all the hype, going to a major league baseball game can be a major expense not to mention a major pain with kids. To enjoy the fun of America's favorite spectator sport in a more family-friendly format, in-the-know New Yorkers go to see one of our area's many minor league baseball teams.

The Staten Island Yankees are the Short-Season Single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees and their games are incredibly kid-friendly. I recently attended a Staten Island Yankees game with my extended family and it makes for a great day or evening out, and includes a ferry ride, a fun ballgame with lots of action in the stands, and often fireworks or other special events. We continue our month-long focus on Staten Island with an outing at this popular ballpark.

Getting from Here to There Safely: Test Driving the New 2014 Subaru Forester

Submitted by Anna Fader on Sat, 07/27/2013 - 7:24am

#subaruforester
In the 90s my father was in a fender bender on the Henry Hudson Highway. His little car was totalled, but the SUV that rear ended him was completely fine. My dad wanted to be the SUV guy next time, so he went and got a Subaru Forester. We loved our boxy Forester and when it died my stepmother got another one that was exactly the same. So, when I was offered a brand new 2014 Subaru to test drive, I was thrilled to check out the complete makeover of our beloved Foresters. Would I love it even more or would the new fangled Subaru Forester not live up to my loving memories?

Mommy Poppins App Is Coming! Help Us Launch It and Win Cool Rewards

Submitted by Anna Fader on Thu, 05/16/2013 - 10:00am

We know you count on Mommy Poppins to find cool things to do with your kids. And we've heard that on the computer, our site is pretty easy to navigate and find what you're looking for. But when you're out and about, finding kid-friendly activities or places to eat on Mommy Poppins isn't that easy. Yeah, we have neighborhood pages with maps, but we admit it's not the best way to find stuff on your smartphone.

That will change with the launch of our new app. The Mommy Poppins App will allow you to find all the great places we write about on our sites—spots to create, be active, learn, shop, eat and more—easily on your phone. We've been working on it for months and we are on track to launch in June. But we have a few final hurdles to jump and we're hoping you can help. And we've got some great incentives if you do.

Read on to find out more about the Mommy Poppins App and the IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign we just launched where you can snag cool rewards like swag, your child's picture in the app, a ticket to our swanky launch party or even a private consultation with Mommy Poppins founder, Anna Fader.

I Am Not the Real Mommy Poppins: A Mother's Day Story

Submitted by Anna Fader on Sun, 05/12/2013 - 7:30pm

Extraordinarily.
There are many stories people can tell to explain how they got where they are today or why they chose the path they did. If you ask me why I started this website, I could tell the story about how I made a New Year's resolution to start a blog and stay with it for one year. Or I could talk about how I felt like my job in advertising was taking me away from mothering too much. I could focus on my passion to curate all the amazing opportunities for kids in NYC that you couldn't find out about in other family publications. I've mentioned all of those things and more when interviewed or asked about the founding of Mommy Poppins, but there's one version of the story I've never told.
