Toddlers get their own place to play at the newly renovated Rainey Park.
Rainey Park Renovations: The Basics
Rainey Park is named for Dr. Thomas Rainey, a resident of Ravenswood who was instrumental in the construction of a bridge across the East River between Manhattan and Long Island City. After falling into disrepair, the NYC Parks Department spent $8.5 million to transform the waterfront park into an inclusive green space that families and residents of all ages could enjoy.
The newly remodeled playground has two sections—one for toddlers and one for older kids. The toddler area has gently rolling synthetic turf mounds for imaginative play, climbing equipment, and slides. There is a separate area with swings.
For older kids, the playground features a large jungle gym with multiple levels, bridges, slides, and even a trampoline in the middle of the structure.
Cooling spray showers separate the big and little kid play areas at Rainey Park.
In between the two playgrounds, you'll find spray showers perfect to cool off in during the summer.
Rainey Park is located on the East River and offers amazing views of Roosevelt Island and the Manhattan skyline. One of the key aims of the renovation was to redesign the pathways throughout the park to create a more open and accessible central lawn. There are now dedicated picnic areas. The NYC Parks Department also widened the greenway to make room for both cyclists and pedestrians and added bicycle racks.
Things To Know Before You Go to Rainey Park
