Best Things to Do in the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center with Kids
1. Hike the Trails
While the Arboretum features more than 5 miles of trails, it’s incredibly family-friendly—even for toddlers—thanks to short, easy loops perfect for little legs. The paths wind through native habitats like wetlands, woodlands, prairie, and savanna, offering something new to see every season.
One of our go-to kid-friendly routes is the Inner Loop Trail, just 0.6 miles long. Midway through, take a quick detour down Meadow Trail to Meadow Pond, where you’re likely to spot turtles sunbathing. On our visits, we’ve also seen birds, rabbits, snakes, and even a tortoise!
Finish the loop at the Nature Playscape, a great reward for your mini hikers. And don’t miss the Donor Boardwalk, a raised wooden path over a peaceful pond full of aquatic plants and wildlife—especially vibrant in the warmer months.

2. Play Outside at the Nature Playscape
The Nature Playscape might just be one of the best playgrounds in Houston. Designed to encourage creative and active outdoor play, this nature-inspired space invites kids to climb, crawl, balance, build, and explore.
Highlights include a giant rope climbing structure that looks like a spider web and a separate toddler play area, so little ones have their own space to explore safely. Bring along digger toys—there’s a huge sand area that’s always a hit with kids.

3. Explore the Discovery Room
Need a break from the heat or just want to explore more? Head inside to the Discovery Room, a fun and interactive indoor exhibit space.
Kids can crawl through prairie tunnels, search for woodland creatures, explore the wetlands, follow the bayou as it winds along the floor, and learn who lives in the savanna. There are also live animals to meet and plenty of hands-on activities to keep curious little ones engaged.
4. Attend a Class or Special Event
The Arboretum also hosts events and classes for all ages, from toddler programs to family festivals. A favorite is Tyke Hikes, which include storytime, a themed craft or activity, and a stroller-friendly nature walk—perfect for young children and their grown-ups.
Seasonal events like ArBOOretum add festive fun, and nature camps during school breaks offer outdoor learning and adventure for kids. Most programs have a small fee (typically $10–$20 per child), with some special events priced separately or by suggested donation.
