WeeWork Kids Crafts: Chihuly Style Sculptures
Dale Chihuly is an American glass sculptor, world renowned for his ornate and complex hanging sculptures. Maybe we can't sculpt or blow glass with little kids, but we can transform everyday household materials into Chihuly-inspired hanging sculptures. This simple project lets kids create colorful abstract works just like Chihuly himself.

1. Use colored sharpies to add color to plastic (solo or other similar type) cups. Encourage kids to create designs alternating the use of cool colors and warm colors, create patterns or even overlap colors to make new ones. The more color the better! You can even use some colored cups!
2. Pop the cups in oven heated to 350 degrees F. Watch the cups as they start to melt and then take out. With a oven mitt covered hand, gently push down on some of the cups to exaggerate the shape more.
3. Once the cups have cooled...use them to create a sculpture! You can use wire hangers, pipe cleaners, beads or feathers to add some texture.
This project was created by Scribble Art Workshop in Upper Manhattan which offers classes for all age groups, drop in open sensory play and story times, and weekend workshops. For more projects from Scribble Art Workshop, visit their blog.
