WeeWork Kids Craft: Make Ice Lanterns

1/22/14 - By Anna Fader

Today's project is a perfect way to make something fun out of the freezing temperatures. Kids find freezing things fun and mysterious. This project is an especially cool way to turn ordinary ice into something magical. And if you aren't in the deep freeze, you can just use your freezer and have the fun without the frostbite. And it's much prettier than finding frozen underwear in your freezer. (Please tell me I'm not the only mom this has happened to.)

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

1. Fill a balloon with water by putting the lip over a faucet (grasp tightly so you don't get squirted).

2. Freeze outdoors or in the freezer for about eight hours or until frozen. You want the ice to be solid but you still want to hear some water sloshing around inside. You may need to experiment with the timing. As you can see, our lantern is very thin as we were a little impatient.

3. Holding your frozen balloon over a sink, cut the knot and peel off the balloon. Pour out the remaining water and place a tea candle inside the ice orb.

Put the finished lantern outside your window and sit inside for a cozy storytime or just watch the dancing lights on the ice.

Kids' work is to play. WeeWork is a Mommy Poppins series offering an easy daily activity for grown-ups and children to do together, making kids' work an important part of your day. We aim to inspire together time, creativity and fun using only your imagination and things around the house. You can see all our WeeWork activity posts here.
