Clothespin Magnets - Fun &Easy Craft for Kids

8/27/25 - By Dari Litchman

Have fun with your little one creating these colorful magnetic clothespin keepers! They're great for pinning up kids' artwork, important reminders, or even as a sweet handmade gift for teachers or Mother's Day. Decorate with things you have lying around the house, like odd buttons, for a personalized touch.

Why Clothespin Crafts are Great for Kids

This easy craft offers several benefits for young crafters:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Painting and embellishing helps develop dexterity.

  • Creativity: Kids can express themselves through color and decoration choices.

  • Affordable: Made with common, inexpensive materials.

  • Thoughtful Gifts: A handmade item makes a truly special present for loved ones like teachers, moms, or grandparents.

What You'll Need for Your Clothespin Craft

Gather these simple supplies to get started:

  • Wooden clothespins

  • Paint (acrylic or tempera work well)

  • Tacky glue

  • Embellishments: buttons, rhinestones, glitter glue, googly eyes, pom-poms, sequins, yarn scraps – whatever inspires you!

  • Magnetic tape roll or strips

Step-by-Step Instructions: Magnetic Clothespin Craft

Follow these easy steps to create your magnetic clothespin keepers:

1. Paint Your Clothespins

Paint your clothespins in fun, bright colors! Paint as much of the clothespin as you can, but try to avoid painting the back where the magnetic tape will go for better adhesion.

2. Let Them Dry

Allow your painted clothespins to dry for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are completely dry to the touch.

3. Add the Magnetic Tape

Stick a 1 1/2-inch piece of magnetic tape to the flat back of each clothespin. If you find the tape isn't sticking well, you can apply a small amount of tacky glue to secure it firmly.

4. Embellish Your Creations

Now for the fun part! Embellish the front of your clothespins with buttons, glitter, rhinestones, sequins, or any other decorations you chose. Let your creativity shine!

5. Display Your Clothespin Keepers

Once the glue and embellishments are dry, your magnetic clothespin keepers are ready to use! Place them on the fridge, a metal whiteboard, or any other magnetic surface where you might need a place to keep an important photo, a grocery list, or that latest masterpiece from your little artist!

Share Your Creations!

We'd love to see your finished clothespin crafts! Share them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and tag @mommypoppins so we can see your amazing creations too!
