No, you’re not dreaming. It’s June already, and that signals the end of another school year. Kids across Long Island are already looking forward to some much-deserved time off from homework. Parents look forward to summer too, but with the expenses of end-of-year functions, camps, and vacations, June can start to really add up.

Fear not, you and the family can still enjoy this last month of school and stay on budget. We’ve rounded up a list of the best FREE things to do on Long Island in June. You won’t want to miss a close-up visit with wildlife, outdoor family yoga, amazing magic tricks, hunting for treasure, and more.

For more ways to enjoy early summer, check out our June GoList. Remember, our Long Island events calendar offers exciting family options as they develop throughout the month. You might also want to visit our guide to Long Island theme parks and water parks as the weather (hopefully) gets warmer.

The sensory garden is a welcoming facility in Shoreham.

If you have kids who love investigating their surroundings, the AHRC Suffolk's sensory garden is a great spot to spend an afternoon. The garden, which opened in May 2017, is a therapeutic environment for residents of Shoreham Homes as well as children and adults of all abilities.

A visit to this unique space is unlike a trip to any park or playground in the area. The garden offers different ways for visitors to interact with the installations and natural settings while inviting them to touch, smell, taste, and play. Admission is FREE.

For more sensory experiences with kids, see our guide to special-needs facilities and programs on Long Island, including our list of inclusive playgrounds that offer more choices for great outdoor fun.

Easter Egg Hunts for Long Island Kids in 2018

Submitted by Thien August on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 2:00pm

This year Easter falls on Sunday, April 1–April Fool's Day–but we're not fooling you when we say we've rounded up the best Easter egg hunts and bunny visits on Long Island. With some venues preparing thousands of eggs, with the help of the Easter Bunny, of course, kids will delight in searching for and collecting every colorful, candy-filled egg.

We're glad to see so many venues have scheduled hunts by age, to give both little and big kids a fair shot at filling their baskets. Remember to bring a basket (or a bag) for the kids to hold their collected treasures, and pack your camera for Easter Bunny brunches and photo-ops. (If there's a threat of rain, be sure to give a call first.)

For more kid-friendly fun, check out our Long Island Events Calendar and March GoList.

Easter Bunny Breakfasts and Brunches Across Long Island

Submitted by Thien August on Fri, 03/02/2018 - 1:00pm

The Easter Bunny will hop into Adventureland for an egg hunt and there will be breakfast with the Easter Bunny too!

Dust off your spring hats and get those baskets ready, because the Easter Bunny is on his way.

Easter is a fun time for kids, but adults can enjoy this holiday too. Many Long Island establishments celebrate with a special Easter breakfast or brunch with treats for the whole family. From waffles and freshly baked pastries to omelet stations, eggs Benedict, and even chocolate fountains, these holiday breakfasts and brunches are a feast for the eyes and stomach. Hop on over to one of these breakfast or brunch spots where families can indulge while sharing quality time with the Bunny himself.

These Easter festivities are listed by date to better aid in your holiday planning. Easter is, of course, Sunday, April 1 this year. Venues below require or strongly suggest reservations, so call and make arrangements. For more Easter and seasonal events, check out our Event Calendar and March GoList.

Best Bowling Alleys for Kids in Suffolk County

Submitted by Thien August on Sun, 02/11/2018 - 1:15pm

Sometimes even 100 things to do aren't enough to keep active kids entertained. If you're looking for a family-friendly activity but keep striking out, why not try your hand at bowling? It's a sport that's easy to learn for most age groups and there's something very satisfying about knocking things over.

A number of bowling centers across Suffolk County offer kid-friendly options such as lighter balls, ramps, and even leagues for little ones. Some alleys have options for adults to enjoy while their kids bowl. Order a pizza or one of the specials from the center's restaurant and make a night of it. And when the bowling shoes come off, a few of these centers even have arcades for more gaming fun.

Check out our list of Suffolk bowling centers sure to bowl you over with fun. And if you're in Nassau County or on the East End, don't worry, we've rounded up a list of the best lanes for you.
