By now you've probably already checked a few items off our LA bucket list of 100+ things to do with Angeleno kids before they become Angeleno adults. But some days Mom can't face the 405; sometimes we just need ideas to fill an hour or two without leaving the 'hood. That's the inspiration for our series of neighborhood fun lists; and speaking of fun neighborhoods, how about that Culver City? Once a well kept secret, these days Culver City is a Westside gem in great demand. But with so much going on, a busy parent could miss some of these great activities around Culver City.

SoCal's Renaissance Pleasure Faire Offers Kids a Day Trip through Time

Some people are Frozen in the Renaissance. Photo by Roberta Brown

Hear ye, hear ye! There's more to Ye Olde Renaissance Faire than turkey legs, men in tights, and replacing all thy "yous" with thees and thous. So if you—or thou—art wondering whether or not it's worth venturing 45 minutes inland in search of a park full of people pretending wholeheartedly that Queen Elizabeth I is still on the throne, the answer is an unmitigated, "Huzzah!"

The Renaissance Pleasure Faire runs Saturdays and Sundays, April 15 through May 21, 2023.

Things To Do in Death Valley National Park with Kids

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Mon, 05/07/2018 - 5:24am

Tell people you're planning a trip to Death Valley with kids, and you're likely to get a response that implies either admiration or an assumption that you're crazy. Or both. That's OK; Death Valley may not be the most obvious choice for a family vacation, but that is definitely part of the appeal. It's a valley full of "I've never seen that before!" with a hint of Old West ghost town.

8 Free Cinco de Mayo Celebrations that Are Great for Families

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Tue, 04/24/2018 - 1:58pm

First let's set the record straight: Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, and—while the festivals might look similar—confusing the two holidays is as gringo as, say, putting pastrami in a taco. (Actually, scratch that—LA is pretty darned proud of its pastrami tacos.) Let's simply agree that just because the US named its independence holiday 4th of July doesn't mean that Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is Mexico's independence day. What the day actually celebrates is an underdog Mexican victory over a French military attack on Puebla, Mexico in 1862. The holiday is mostly observed in Puebla and in Southern California, where there's little mention of the French, but much swinging at piñatas and dancing to mariachis. After all, by the first weekend of May, who needs more excuse than that to revel in the sunshine?

If Cute Panda Videos Make Your Day, the Science Center Has Something for You

Few things are more universal than cute panda videos. Even people who can resist the internet's most infectious silly cat videos melt in the face of an insanely cute panda bear rolling around hugging himself in a Facebook share. The California Science Center embraces this inescapable truth with a full-on bear hug. This past weekend the museum's IMAX theater debuted the movie Pandas, a nature documentary for the whole family. Imagine the cutest collection of baby panda clips ever made. Now imagine them in 3D on a screen seven stories tall. It's a level of cute few people can handle, but we all should try.

Dragon's Breath: Liquid Nitrogen Is Cool, But Is It OK To Eat?

Roberta B's picture Submitted by Roberta B on Mon, 03/26/2018 - 1:26pm

What started out an obscure and edgy treat in Koreatown a year or so ago has recently become a trendy dessert sweeping many corners of LA: Dragon's Breath. That's the name given to a frozen snack made by dipping some small, sweet bite (usually a cereal-like puff) into liquid nitrogen. If it sounds more like a science experiment than a dessert, it kind of is. But K-town's Chocolate Chair turned Dragon's Breath into a must-try confection on every tween and teen's to do list (not to mention their Snapchat and Instagram feeds). As the trend works its way down from big kids to little ones, and from obscure to mainstream, parents need to be in the know—and ready to answer the question, "Is it OK for my kid to eat liquid nitrogen?"
