Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 09/19/2013 - 4:00pm

It's been a high-tech week here at Mommy Poppins NYC. We shared some of our favorite FREE coding websites for kids, rounded up Minecraft clubs in NYC, explored the American Museum of Natural History in a whole new way thanks to the History Hero app and tonight, my daughter and I are off to see the digitally interactive Little Mermaid Second Screen Live.

Lest you think HAL has taken over, we posted about some good old-fashioned analog activities, too, like great places to see autumn leaves in NYC and the top family shows opening this fall. Our regional sites are also chock-full of seasonal fun like fall harvest festivals in Westchester, New Jersey, Connecticut and on Long Island, and family-friendly apple and pumpkin-picking spots throughout the tri-state area.

This weekend brings some of our absolute favorite annual events in NYC, including Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science and the Queens County Fair. Plus, on Sunday Mommy Poppins is hosting a special eco-themed family cruise on Manhattan by Sail's Clipper City Tall Ship. Enjoy hands-on nature activities, sailor skills, face painting and stunning New York Harbor views. Tickets are selling fast so get yours today.

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Tue, 09/17/2013 - 10:00am

In this edition of our biweekly links roundup, we've got the scoop on a brilliant new service aimed at the parents of Lego-obsessed kids, a new high-tech way to apply to kindergarten, the extension of a super-popular family attraction and why audiences will be leaving their iPads on at Disney's rerelease of The Little Mermaid. Plus, some improvements are coming to the South Street Seaport and Randall's Island, and why New York City's latest No. 1 status isn't a compliment.

This Week: Free Fall Harvest Festivals, Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids, Queens' New Destination Playground

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 09/12/2013 - 1:00pm

After less than a week at school, my daughter says she feels like she never left. Not that she's complaining. Going back-to-school means seeing old friends and after-school playground playdates and a break from me constantly demanding, "Go clean your room!" It also means our big back-to-school giveaway is soon coming to a close. There are still a few excellent prizes up for grabs, including boys' and girls' Schwinn bikes, and KRE-O CityVille Invasion building sets from Hasbro. Be sure to enter before they end.

Beyond school, fall brings all kinds of cool seasonal fun like apple picking and harvest celebrations. This week, we added posts about pick-your-own orchards in Westchester and Rockland Counties and organic apple picking in New Jersey to our Farm Guide. We also rounded up a bunch of harvest festivals, pumpkin patches and corn mazes right here in NYC.

Planning your next big family vacation? (Hey, holiday break will be here before you know it.) Our Travel site has a post about the best things to do with kids in Bath, England that will make you want to book your tickets pronto. And of course our regional sites are filled with wonderful day trip destinations like Saugerties in Ulster County, NY, Chester Township, NJ and the Trash Museum in Hartford, CT.

This Week: Free Fall Festivals, Best Things to Do with Kids in September, Apple Picking Near NYC, Back-to-School Giveaway

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 09/05/2013 - 12:00pm

What have you been doing to keep the kids busy these final days of summer break? We here at Mommy Poppins are furiously crossing off items on our summer bucket lists. Yesterday, a few of us got together and spent the day on City Island in the Bronx. Today, we're off to the recently reopened Rockaway Park in Queens. Where do we go for destination inspiration? Mommy Poppins' in-depth NYC Kids Neighborhood Guides. For the past two years, we've been highlighting one neighborhood a month in a series of in-depth posts, and now we've put all of those hyper-local guides together on one jam-packed page. Even if you've lived in NYC all your life, you'll undoubtedly find cool new-to-you things to explore with your family. I sure have!

September has arrived, which means all of our sites have published brand-new Go Lists highlighting the absolute best things to do with kids throughout the month. It's a particularly awesome month for family events in NYC, with lots of our free fall favorites like Fort Tryon Park's Medieval Festival and the Dumbo Arts Festival. But you'll find plenty of great picks in nearby Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut, too, including things you can only do outside the city like apple picking and farm harvest festivals.

The back-to-school season is in full swing and so is our massive back-to-school giveaway. We have already awarded a few of our fabulous prizes but we've got a bunch to go including a $250 gift certificate for Sears Optical, a Disney Junior package, Schwinn bikes and KRE-O CityVille Invasion building sets by Hasbro. All of the giveaways will be over soon so enter now.

This Week: End-of-summer Getaway Deals & Ideas, Huge Back-to-school Giveaway, New After-school Classes

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 08/22/2013 - 12:00pm

Even though we have a few weeks of summer break left in NYC, the back-to-school season is in full swing in many other parts of the country. That's why we're launching our big back-to-school giveaway next week. Starting on Wednesday, August 28, you can enter to win a bunch of awesome prizes including two Schwinn kids' bikes, $150 worth of personalized school supplies from My Chronicle Books, a Disney Junior package that includes bedding and a backpack, and more. Bookmark the page or keep an eye on your inbox next week. We'll be sending out an email when the giveaway launches.

Meanwhile, for New York City public school students, there are two more weeks and three full weekends (including a holiday one!) before the first day. Time to full up your calendar with free and fun things to do in NYC and beyond. We've got day trip suggestions, a list of New York State county fairs, Labor Day weekend getaway deals, house-swapping info or, if you're stuck working, a roundup of day camps running the last two weeks of summer break. Plus our regional sites have all kinds of cool out-of-town activity ideas like scenic cruises or zip-lining in New Jersey, mini-golf on Long Island (sure we have a bunch of courses in NYC but the ones on the isle are much more elaborate) and kid-friendly hiking in Westchester.

This Week: NYC Kids Classes Guide, Pirate Cruise for Families, Last-chance Summer Fun, Awesome Weekend Events

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 08/15/2013 - 1:00pm

My family and I are making the most of these last few weeks of summer break and we hope you are, too. On our agenda this weekend: a FringeJr. show, a trip to Rockaway Beach and dressing up for the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. We're the family that never sleeps.

In anticipation of the back-to-school season, we updated our Classes Guide this week. We've got the scoop on some of the coolest kids' programs around, from sports (basketball, tennis) to enrichment (Spanish and Chinese language, animal care) to the offbeat (trapeze, DJing), and even FREE classes. If you're looking for extracurricular activities this fall, the guide gives you a multitude of quality options.

We're also gearing up for our next Mommy Poppins Family Cruise next Tuesday, August 20 and if your kids are pirate-obsessed you won't want to miss it. In addition to enjoying incredible views of New York Harbor on Manhattan by Sail's Clipper City Tall Ship, families will be treated to David Engel's uproarious interactive show Pirate School!, where he teaches kids how to walk, talk and act like buccaneers. We have two sails from South Street Seaport on Tuesday and we hope you can join us. Click here to book tickets.

Our regional sites are full day trip inspiration like the best places to get wet in Westchester, great places to camp in central Connecticut and the top parks on Long Island. Much as we're addicted to NYC, there's nothing wrong with going out of town for a day or two.

This Week: NYC Day Trip Ideas, Focus on Staten Island, Best Parks & Playgrounds for Kids' Birthday Parties

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 08/08/2013 - 1:00pm

We had an awesome time at our inaugural Mommy Poppins Family Cruise last Sunday. That's my daughter in the pic, helping to hoist the sails of Manhattan by Sail's Clipper City Tall Ship. (She turned eight that very day so I figured it was time to put her to work.) We put up a photo gallery on our Facebook page of all the fun we had, including face painting, Bill Gordh's sea songs and incredible views of the Statue of Liberty. Our next cruise is coming up on Tuesday, August 20 and it's got a pirate theme! Read our post for all the details and to book tickets.

It's the last full month of summer break so there's no time to waste: NYC's beaches and pools close on Labor Day. If you're in need of childcare those last few weeks before school starts, check out our post about late-August/early-September camps—we keep adding new programs as we hear about them. Or if you're looking for day trip ideas, check out our regional sites for inspiration. Westchester's August Go List includes one of my family's summer favorites: the New York Renaissance Faire in Sterling Forest. Much as we love NYC's free public pools, city kids really get a kick out of taking a dip in natural swimming holes like these ponds and lakes in Connecticut and New Jersey. Or stick close to home and explore the "forgotten borough:" We're highlighting the best things to do in Staten Island throughout the month.

Finally, if you're thinking about taking the kids to one of the big summer family flicks, our Boston site has parent-child reviews of Smurfs 2 and Turbo, so you can get opinions from both sides!
