Free Outdoor Summer Music Festivals & Concerts in NYC: Best Bets for Families

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Sun, 06/01/2014 - 4:00pm

Although some New York City outdoor music and performance series are created specifically with children in mind, there are lots of grown-up ones that families can enjoy, too. At these wonderful alfresco events—most of which take place in parks and plazas—families can pack a picnic, stake out a spot, lay down a blanket and soak up some culture at no cost. Don't worry if the kids aren't totally into it; sit along the perimeter and let them run around, dance and play and they'll be happy.

While many series including SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn! and Lincoln Center Out of Doors host dedicated family days, it's worth browsing their full schedules. There's no minimum age to enjoy jazz, classical or rock, right?

We've rounded up NYC's best FREE outdoor music and performance series and highlighted the events we think will be of particular interest to families. You can find even more family fun in our jam-packed Summer Guide.

This Week: Best June Family Events in NYC, Summer Camps That Still Have Space, Hamptons Family Guide, Free June Festivals

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 05/29/2014 - 1:00pm

My family and I had Coney Island practically to ourselves on opening day last Saturday thanks to stormy skies. While in Luna Park, we got a sneak peek at its newest ride, the Thunderbolt roller coaster, tentatively scheduled to open next weekend. Also coming soon: a brand-new mini-amusement park at Staten Island's Midland Beach. Looks like this summer is shaping up to be a fun and dizzy one.

This week we launched our Hamptons and North Fork Family Guide for the season, in case you're planning on a weekend getaway or perhaps a whole summer on Long Island's East End. Be sure to check our LI site for frequent posts about the best things to do in the area with kids, like family-friendly fishing charters and the best weekend events. You'll find other great summer day trip ideas, like New Jersey playgrounds with free mini zoos or boating in Westchester, on all of our regional sites, and more far-flung destinations such as San Antonio, Texas on our Travel site.

If you're sticking around the city this season like my family, make sure you check out our roundup of the best things to do with kids this June and our list of more than 50 NYC summer camps that still have space. Speaking of camp, we're currently giving away a FREE week of Summer Media Camp at Queens' Museum of the Moving Image. Enter now.

This Week: Memorial Day Weekend Kicks Off Summer Fun in the City, Best Things to Do with NYC Preschoolers, World Science Fest

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 05/22/2014 - 4:00pm

Every year at this time, I feel as distracted as a toddler in a roomful of bubbles. It's hard to focus on anything because I'm so excited about the Memorial Day holiday. (And if this is happening to me, I don't even want to imagine how my eight-year-old is acting in school this week.) My family and I are looking forward to a fun-filled Memorial Day weekend NYC staycation—the beach, Governors Island and a Bronx backyard barbecue are all on our agenda. Lots of big seasonal attractions open for the season this Saturday so be sure to check our just-updated Summer Fun Guide to see all of your options.

Of course this is a big weekend for leaving town, too, and you'll find great family getaway ideas on all of our regional sites, from beaches with playgrounds on Long Island to outdoor water adventures in Connecticut to pick-your-own flower farms in New Jersey. If you'd like to teach your kids about the significance of the holiday, there are patriotic Memorial Day parades throughout the tri-state area and military ship tours right here in NYC.

Before any of us can lose focus again (it's hard, right?), we want to wish you and your family a happy holiday, whatever you end up doing. Here's what else we covered on the NYC site this week:

This Week: Memorial Day Weekend Guide, What's New on Governors Island, Laurie Berkner in Concert & Other Amazing Weekend Events

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 05/15/2014 - 12:00pm

Even though Memorial Day weekend is next week, we're gearing up for summer's unofficial kickoff a little early. (After the winter we all endured, we can't help fantasizing about warm weather fun.) Check out our Spring Guide and you'll find posts about seasonal attractions opening on the holiday weekend, like the newly expanded Governors Island and Central Park's beloved tot spot Victorian Gardens amusement park. We also rounded up a bunch of great family getaways in New Jersey for Memorial Day weekend or any summer weekend.

Speaking of getting out of town, our regional sites are full of travel inspiration, whether you're looking for a quick day trip or a bona fide vacation. New Jersey just posted about pick-your-own strawberry farms and you can find even more berry-picking spots in our Farm Guide. Even though we've got mini golf right here in NYC, the ones in Westchester have a lot more bells and whistles (and ponds and windmills). Or commune with nature by visiting NJ's beautiful tree-filled arboretums.

Of course you don't need to skip town to have fun. In fact, this weekend you'll want to stick around since there are so many amazing family activities going on, including a Laurie Berkner concert, the annual Dance Parade New York and Queens' World's Fair Anniversary Festival. Plus you'll find the Mommy Poppins' gang at the New York Baby Show, where we'll be giving away some awesome prizes and showing kids how to make these adorable WeeWork Clothespin Creatures.

This Week: Mother's Day in NYC, Mommy Poppins App on the Katie Couric Show, Free Summer Sports for Kids

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 05/08/2014 - 12:00pm

It's been a very exciting week here at Mommy Poppins, and not just because Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday. On Tuesday, our FREE Mommy Poppins Kids on the Go app was highlighted on The Katie Couric Show as one of the best apps for busy moms. We also shared an inspiring video shot at our kids coding workshops last weekend featuring girls as young as age 6 learning how to program. And our media blitz continues this Friday, when Shari from our New Jersey site will appear on Fox's Good Day New York to chat about all things mom.

But that's enough screen time for us—the spring weather means we're all spending as much time as possible out and about. If you've been looking for day trip destinations, our Long Island site just posted about pick-your-own strawberry farms and family-friendly campgrounds. Westchester rounded up 30 fun things to do with kids in Yonkers, home to the Legoland Discovery Center, the Hudson River Museum and the Science Barge. And New Jersey continued its series on great small towns with a profile of the quaint seaside community of Stone Harbor. Want to go a little further? Our Travel site has a list of spring travel deals that includes Universal Orlando, Disney and even Hawaii.

Our giveaway has great odds this week: We're giving away 100 family tickets (good for two adults and up to four children) to the annual New York Baby Show, which takes place next weekend in Midtown West.

This Week: Best May Family Events in NYC & Beyond, Win a Full Summer of Camp, Coding for NYC Kids

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Thu, 05/01/2014 - 3:30pm

The one upside to the torrential rain this week were all the impressive pics of NYC rainbows I saw on Instagram. I took my rainbow shot down on Delancey Street and it was quite a hit on our Facebook page. But now that May is here, all of the April showers should be behind us. We certainly hope so since many of our top family event picks for May in NYC take place outdoors, like the iconic Dance Parade New York and the Memorial Day weekend opening of the newly expanded Governors Island.

If you're thinking about going on a quick spring getaway, look to our May Go Lists in New Jersey, Westchester, Long Island and beyond for inspiration. There are some truly day-trip-worthy happenings coming up, including Historic Hudson Valley's brand-new glow-in-the-dark installation Lightscapes and the annual Hoboken Spring Arts and Music Festival, which are both happening this weekend. Thinking of taking a longer trip? Over on our Travel site, Mommy Poppins founder, Anna, talks about the benefits of extended travel with kids and recalls the transformative experience of spending a month in Spain as a child.

And we have an amazing giveaway going on this week: Enter to win an entire summer session of camp at the JCC Day Camp at Pearl River—a $3,500 value. Since I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my eight-year-old this summer, I wish I were eligible to enter!

Top 10 Cool Kids' Concerts: Laurie Berkner, Suzi Shelton, Pixar in Concert & More Live Family Music for Spring 2014

Raven Snook's picture Submitted by Raven Snook on Mon, 04/21/2014 - 6:00pm

We finish up our spring culture coverage with a roundup of the ten best kids' concerts taking place this season. They're not all your usual kindie rock suspects, either. There are some seriously awesome-sounding family music shows coming up including a one-day-only concert by the queen of preschool rock, Laurie Berkner; a kid-friendly performance by former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant; an album release party for Brooklyn songstress and mom Suzi Shelton; and the New York Philharmonic's fun classical spin on Pixar movie themes.

As usual, we've kept an eye on the prices. Yes, a few of the special concerts command high ticket fees, but some picks are under $20 and three are 100% FREE. Here are 10 concerts where you can clap, dance and sing along this spring.
