When I think of the long, lazy days of summer from my childhood, one of my favorite memories is visiting the local waterpark. Hours of water slides and tubing around the lazy river is always a summer day well spent. So when a free weekend popped up on the schedule, my family jumped at the chance to hop in the car with the camper in tow and head to Grand Prairie for a weekend road trip and a day playing at Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark.

Best of August: Top Things To Do in Houston with Kids

Celebrate the remaining days of summer at Sugar Land Town Square's Back to School Splash Bash! Photo courtesy of courtesy of Sugar Land Town Square

Summer is not over yet! August in Houston is a great time to enjoy outdoor movies and concerts, summer festivals, and the best beach days.

Back to school is on the horizon, and there are some awesome events this August to get back into the school spirit! The Back to School Splash Bash at Sugar Land Town Square is always a slam dunk event to attend, as is Shake Your Summer Sillies Out at The Woodlands Children's Museum. Later in the month, we highly recommend heading to Galveston for the annual AIA Sandcastle Contest; the sandcastles the artists create are out of this world and definitely a sight to be seen in person! Lastly, Kidz Bop is coming to Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion at the end of the month and is sure to get the kids hyped up with catchy music and dance moves.

Find more top August fun in our roundup of 50 Free Things to Do in Houston With Kids This Summer, our Summer Fun Guide for Houston Kids, and our Ultimate Summer Bucket List. Plus, now is the time to get in a few more trips to our favorite splash pads and sprinkler parks before they close for the season!

We’re adding more events to our family activity calendar every day, so don’t forget to check it frequently.

My toddler runs circles around the house all day long. For this reason, we have a list of favorite outdoor parks, playgrounds, and splash pads to head to when his energy levels are at an all-time high and we need a change of scenery. But during the long Houston summer, on rainy days, or when we just feel like playing somewhere new, Houston's many great indoor play spaces serve the same purpose. As an added bonus, many of these places also have areas for babies and toddlers to play and learn, which is the perfect combination for any parent with children who fall into multiple age ranges.
