Things to Do in Chicago's Lincoln Square Neighborhood with Kids

Lincoln Square is a historically-German Chicago neighborhood at the Western stop of the Brown Line. This fun neighborhood is anchored by Giddings Plaza, a pedestrian plaza with a historic-looking fountain just east of Lincoln Avenue between Leland and Lawrence. Its location just off the L and with narrow streets makes it a pedestrian-friendly location with lots of unique shops and restaurants for families to explore.

Many families come to Lincoln Square for its street festivals or for a concert at The Old Town School of Folk Music, which is not actually located in Old Town. But there's plenty to do, see, hear, and eat even after those events are over. Here are some great things to do with kids in the Lincoln Square neighborhood.

The Chicago Loop Alliance has announced that the CTA Holiday Train will be riding the rails again for the 32nd year in 2023. Holiday buses are back, too! Look for Santa Claus as he returns to the trains and buses and for pictures with kids.

UNLIMITED ICE CREAM. For us, and I'm assuming for most families, that's the biggest attraction at the Museum of Ice Cream Chicago. Here, you can eat your way through an imaginative world of sweetness, along with one weird savory treat, and take plenty of selfies along the way. When you first walk into Chicago's CAMP, it looks like a toy store filled with games, puzzles, figurines, balls, scooters and more. But I'd actually describe it as a "purveyor of fun." Much more than a store, CAMP hosts events, shows, and immersive experiences for kids. We were lucky enough to check out their Doodles X CAMP immersive experience, and it was a great time. Trunk-or-Treats in Chicago for Halloween 2023

Trunk-or-treat events in Chicago mean that it's never too cold, too hot, or too far to walk on Halloween. Trunk-or-treats are perfect for the littlest ghosts and goblins because they take less time and are often during daylight hours. Trunk-or-treat in Chicago involves local families, businesses, or organizations decorating their cars and lining them up in a parking lot so kids can go from trunk to trunk gathering sweets, just like trick-or-treating. And many neighborhoods and suburbs have them, sponsored by their park district, local church, school, or toy store. Trunk-or-treating also offers kids an extra opportunity to grab some candy before Halloween, while supporting local businesses and non-profits.

Corn mazes throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin present creative themes and different ways to navigate the twists and turns, so children of varying ages can join in the challenge. What Can Really Be Recycled? Myth-Busting the Recycle Symbol

It can be hard to determine just what goes into the recycling bin.

We all know how important recycling is for the environment. Unfortunately, it's hard to figure out exactly how to recycle. What does the recycle symbol mean? What can be recycled (and what can't)? Where do we put items we want to recycle? And, most important, how do we teach kids about recycling symbols and what they mean?

This confusion—coupled with the fact that recycling rules often vary from city to city—is part of the reason only 32% of trash in the US is recycled, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
