Things To Do in NYC this Weekend with Kids: San Gennaro, Concerts, Monarchs

NYC is aflutter with Monarch madness this weekend as the butterflies make their yearly migratory pitstop in the city. Learn more at the Monarch Celebration on Saturday on Randall's Island  (consider it a warmup for the return of the American Museum of Natural History's popular annual butterfly exhibit, opening October 12). Creatures with a somewhat more impressive wingspan gather at the annual Raptor Fest in Central Park on Saturday. And non-winged creatures get a moment in the sun when moles invade Skirball Center in Philippe Quesne's punk rock performance. (Kids can parade with the moles through Greenwich Village on Thursday, Sept 12, at 2pm, too!)

Big celebrations include Madison Square Park's Stages in the Square on Saturday, with a packed roster of live performances, the cannoli-fueled crush that is Little Italy's San Gennaro Festival, and the start of Morningside Lights' weeklong festivities, which culminate next weekend (September 21) with the annual lantern-lit parade.

The Bronx is action-packed this weekend: Head to City Island for the Fall Arts and Crafts fair (make a day of it with dinner at one of the island's kid-friendly restaurants). Or visit Wave Hill's weekend-long family art project. All that, plus Boogie on the Blvd returns on Sunday to shut down the Grand Concourse center lanes between 162nd and 170th Streets.

Brooklyn's in party mode, too, with the Brooklyn United Back-to School extravaganza, the One Crown Heights Neighborhood Fest, and Old Stone House's annual Bike Jumble. And on Governors Island, kids can create sustainable energy machines, watch amazing WWI re-enactments, or participate in the annual African Film Fest—or all three!

As always, keep our September Go List handy, and refer to the full Mommy Poppins calendar for more fall fun!

Things to Do in NYC This Weekend: West Side County Fair, Harvest Moon Fests, Ferragosto

Drew Kristofik's picture Submitted by Drew Kristofik on Wed, 09/04/2019 - 11:00am

Explore the customs and traditions behind the harvest Mid-Autumn Moon Festival with a mooncake tasting, arts and crafts, story time, and more family fun at MOCA. Photo courtesy of the museum

School is back in session, but for NYC kids there's so much fun to be had, it might as well still be summer. In Manhattan, check out the popular West Side County Fair, a family-friendly art show in Carl Schurz Park, and Sunday's Folk Music fest in Washington Square Park, or hit a harvest moon festival in Queens, Staten Island, or Chinatown. Head to Arthur Ave in the Bronx for Ferragosto, where you'll find great food, live music, and fewer crowds than Little Italy's San Gennaro fest.

Birds and other high fliers get their due this weekend, too. Don't miss the Migration Celebration in South Cove, Randall's Island's Fairy Workshop, and Socrates Sculpture Park's Kite Making Workshop. You can also learn about bird migration at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

All that, plus...Fall theater for families is ready for a round of applause. Check out Mettaee River Theatre Company's The Ringdove, Water, Water, Everywhere on Governors Island, and Lear: That Old Man I Used to Know for a jump on the season.

Keep our September GoList handy, and our roundup of the Best Fall Festivals for NYC Kids in September, packed with more apple-bobbing, Halloween festivities, and harvest celebrations than you can shake a cornstalk at. As always, our trusty Event Calendar stands at the ready with daily activities and details.

14 Popular Preschools in Park Slope, Brooklyn

Drew Kristofik's picture Submitted by Drew Kristofik on Mon, 09/02/2019 - 2:00pm

Greenlight your preschool search with our list of popular preschools in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Photo courtesy of Prospect Kids Academy

Finding the right preschool fit is almost as daunting as getting your kid into the right college—meaning, people will try to terrify you, but odds are good you'll find a great spot for your little one, even if it isn't your first choice. Close your eyes. Breathe.

Whether you opt for a full day, five-day-a-week program or just a few half days, your child will benefit from spending time with kids and adults who are outside your family circle. Potty training, reading, small motor skills, early math—all of these come in time, but preschool will lay the foundations. The most important factor in choosing a preschool is whether you and your child feel comfortable there. Do the children look happy? Are they engaged in projects or play in the classroom? Are the teachers focused, but also friendly and welcoming? That's what counts.

Also consider whether you'd like to commit your own time, which would make you a perfect candidate for a co-op preschool, or if the time commitment required might be hard for you to fulfill, in which case a traditional or year-round preschool would be best. The difference between a school that embraces Reggio Emilia and one that uses a Montessori method are slight (both embrace open space and child-directed learning), but you may find you prefer teachers who consider themselves "guides" en route to making the child independent (Montessori) - or you may be drawn to Reggio's emphasis on communication and documentation. Home-based preschools may feel "cozier" and more a continuum of what your child has already experienced in your own home.

After that, look for:

  • Communication: How the school interacts with parents, and how parents interact with teachers, is key.
  • Security: Who has access to the school during the day? What is the teacher/child ratio for your child's age group?
  • Structure: What is a typical day at school like? Are there special progams, such as music or science?
  • Discipline policy: Does it align with your own? How is potty training handled (if your child is not quite "there" yet)?
  • What are the facilities like? Is everything sparkling clean? Is there a separate play space? What are the options for outdoor play?

And even though it is strongly recommended that your start your search early (at least a year in advance), remember that spots do open up. Ask about wait lists if you're late to the process or new in town.

We've done a little research on Park Slope preschool options, breaking down some fundamentals for you, below, but remember our Directory is an excellent resource, too! And prep for your interviews with 10 Questions to Ask During a Preschool Tour and our Preschool Admissions Tips.

Happy hunting.

Things to Do This Weekend: US Open, Jazz, Battle of Brooklyn, Soapbox Derby, High Line

Bring the family to the US Open Experience for kids' programming and the chance to win prizes! Photo courtesy of BFPL

Tennis anyone? The annual Arthur Ashe Kids' Day is back, bringing tennis stars and music superstars to NYC in advance of next weekend's US Open. Can't get to Queens? Check out the US Open Experience down in the Financial District for kids' clinics, big-screen tennis viewing, and the chance to score a free racket!

For old-fashioned summer fun, soapboxes will roll through Park Slope at Saturday's South Slope Derby, or families can create art En Plein Air on the High Line. History buffs can celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, fought in 1776 on land that is now part of Green-Wood Cemetery, at the Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration on Sunday. Or visit George Washington's Encampment on the Upper West Side to check out what revolutionary soldiers had to eat.

Jazz fans (and fans-in-the-making) can "count down to the 20s" at Governors Island's Jazz Age Lawn party, where jitter-bugging is on repeat all weekend long and kids under 12 can tag along for free. Or hit the Jazzmobile Block Party in Corona, Queens, at the Louis Armstrong House for serious be-bop cred.

Check a few more things off that "before school starts" summer bucket list—or start planning for fall: Tickets for Smithsonian Museum Day, offering FREE access to museums all around the city on September 21, are available to download now. Get 'em before they're gone! For more end-of-summer fun, check our August GoList and Event Calendar.

Things to Do This Weekend: Harlem Fest, Sand Castles, Kites, Math Fest, Honey

We're counting on having a great time at the fourth annual Math Festival hosted by MoMath on Saturday, with laser cutting, giant mazes, music, and roller coaster design to make STEM irresistible.

Also this Saturday: Watch the colors fly at the Upper West Side's annual Kite Flying Festival. Scoot down to the third (and final) Summer Streets Fest. Skip through the sprinklers at Asphalt Green's second splashy free-for-all. Or head down to Coney Island to enjoy the sunshine and artistry at the annual Sand Sculpting Contest.

Harlem Week romps through uptown all weekend long, with a children's festival on Saturday and daily performances that run from hip hop to poetry to tap dance. And Wave Hill is literally buzzing—it's Honey Weekend again, and that means candle-making, sweet treats, and the traditional Be a Bee workshop and parade.

All this, plus over a hundred other events (50+ each day) are baked into the Mommy Poppins Calendar. Check out our list of the 50 best places to cool off this summer, and don't forget the fun-packed August Go List. And the outdoor movies that were canceled due to all the rain earlier this summer are now being scheduled through September—bookmark our Free Outdoor Movie page to see what's playing (for free!) near you.

Weekend Fun: Summer Streets, Tomato Fest, Battery Dance Fest, Fish Count

High on our "must" list of things to do in New York City this weekend are the second car-free Summer Streets fest on Park Avenue on Saturday, and the New York Botanical Garden's Totally Tomatoes Fest (our toddler eats them like apples!). And, if you're in the Bronx anyway, stopping by the Bronx Zoo's Dinosaur Safari might make a perfect topper for the day.

New York City kids who like to dance (a decided majority) should love the FREE Kids' Dance Class at Rockefeller Center on Saturday, perfect prep for the 38th Annual Battery Dance Festival, which starts its week-long run in Wagner Park on Sunday. If the wiggles continue, head over to Brooklyn Bridge Park for the Moving Together Dance Series and shake them out!

City parks are packed with cool activities, like the Great Fish Count on Randall's Island, the Macy's Fishing Clinic in Prospect Park, foraging tours with Wildman Steve Brill (in Central Park on Saturday and Prospect Park on Sunday), Great Jazz on the Great Hill, and an outdoor screening of Wonder Park.

Our August GoList and Summer Fun Guide are powered up with the best ideas for family outings, and our event calendar adds things to do daily. And don't miss our list of Summer Must Dos: 40 ways to squeeze all the fun you can out of summer, before the school year starts up again.

Weekend Fun: Summer Streets, Dragon Boats, Kids Rule Fest

Drew Kristofik's picture Submitted by Drew Kristofik on Wed, 07/31/2019 - 3:00pm

It's all about the kids at Kids Rule Weekend. Photo courtesy of Lehman Stages

And just like that, it's August! But summer is far from winding down for New York City kids. Proof? Two words: Summer Streets. For three straight Saturdays beginning August 3, Manhattan blocks traffic on an unbroken route from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Upper East Side and replaces it with fun outdoor activities—even a climbing wall and a zip line—at stops along the way. See our full lowdown on Summer Streets.

Kids Rule Weekend returns to Lehman College in the Bronx with pony rides and water slides for the toddler and preschool set. The Lincoln Center Out of Doors Family Day kicks off with World Roots music. The Rockaways' Water Fest is wet and wild as ever. Theatro SEA's Arts for All Fest pops up on the Lower East Side with a weekend-long celebration of Puerto Rican plena. And Hong Kong Dragon Boats race through Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

There's lots happening on NYC's riverfronts this weekend, too: Light a lantern for peace at the Hindu Lamp Ceremony in Brooklyn Bridge Park, or show off your dance moves at the Sweet Spot Festival at West Harlem Piers Park. Grab an oar and try your hand at Community Rowing, or learn to kayak or canoe at Hallets Cove.

Our August GoList has all the must-do events for families coming up this month, and don't forget the Summer Fun Guide, bursting with cool stuff to do, including how to get to the beach in a hurry, water park day trips, and even FREE splash pads.

Weekend Fun: Midsummer PowWow, Poetry Fest, City of Science, Storytelling Fest

Drew Kristofik's picture Submitted by Drew Kristofik on Wed, 07/24/2019 - 4:00pm

It's another jam-packed summer weekend in NYC, and after last weekend's deep-fried weather we're hoping to venture out into more temperate temperatures. The spectacular Thunderbird Mid-Summer Powwow brings over 40 Native nations together for a weekend of dance and celebration in Queens, Brooklyn is staking a claim to hosting the world's biggest bounce house, Lehman College in the Bronx is cooking up tons of City of Science fun, Biennial artist Robert Bittenbender is helping kids create a giant velcro installation at the Whitney, and, as usual, there's MUCH more happening around all five boroughs.

At the 9th Annual New York Poetry Festival on Governors Island, kids can go on a word-themed scavenger hunt, speak their minds at the afternoon open mic sessions, and listen to some of America's best poets recite. Meanwhile, the High Line Young Storytellers Fest helps kids build their own tales, Stories at the Statue in Central Park has two classic Hans Christian Andersen tales on the docket this Saturday, and authors read kids' books at Books of Wonder's UWS locale on Saturday and Chelsea store on Sunday. You can always find more story events by searching our calendar.

On Sunday, head over to the Brooklyn Roots Fest at Lefferts Historic House, check out the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano's Guelaguetza Festival at Socrates Sculpture Park, explore Central Park's North Woods on a Discovery Walk specifically designed for families, or boogie with Rolie Polie Guacamolie in Fort Greene.

Keep an eye on our packed Summer Fun Guide and our NYC Event Calendar for a non-stop panoply of fun things to do with the family as we head into August!
