This is it. The opportunity for one more August weekend hurrah. With only a couple of days left before the onset of early bedtimes and hectic morning routines, it's important to make the most of the last days of summer. Maybe you're heading to the beach one more time, or looking to explore an outdoor museum. If you're seeking a sweet experience, consider touring Fascia's Chocolates or scouring the menu at an old-fashioned ice cream parlor.

Located on the northeast edge of New Haven County, Cheshire has twice been named by Money magazine as one of "100 Best Places to Live", and for good reason. Packed in an area of 33 square miles, you will find charming neighborhoods filled with tree-lined streets, history, art, culture, playgrounds, delicious places to eat, Connecticut's tallest single drop waterfall, and one awesome cartoon museum. Whether you choose to spend a day in town, or just a few hours, there is plenty to do here.

It’s August! With days getting shorter and less than a month to go before most students return to school, it’s tempting to feel sorry for ourselves and denounce the fleeting summer season. But summer isn’t quite over. In fact, there’s still much to look forward to: vegetables and fruits abound, sunflowers are aglow, and plenty of beach days remain.

Though it is home to Connecticut’s flagship university, Storrs is a fun village not only for college students. Located about a half an hour east of Hartford, plenty of local attractions here (and in the town of Mansfield) will entertain, educate, and relax even the youngest visitors. So spend some time driving over its bucolic hills, exploring its trails, shopping its quaint stores, or enjoying a movie at one of the last remaining drive-in theaters in the state.

This weekend promises to be hugely delicious and refreshing: Sunday is National Ice Cream Day! Whether you decide to track down tempting ice cream parlors (we sampled a few for you in Fairfield and New Haven counties), or make your own frozen treats at home, be sure to celebrate the sweet occasion.
If you find yourself savoring ice cream in the Hartford area, consider ending the night with free music and a movie at The Shoppes of Farmington Valley. You can also enjoy a movie or a concert in Fairfield County, or sign up the kids for a cooking class at Williams Sonoma (various locations). My family is contemplating a guided hike at Ansonia Nature Center, and, of course, finding a local ice cream shoppe.

Located on the southwestern border of Hartford County, Bristol’s influence dates back to the 19th century when it was known as the clock-making city. Today, it is primarily famous as the home of ESPN and Lake Compounce, America’s oldest still-running theme park.

Where can you find a two-headed calf, Mark Twain's bicycle, and an alligator dangling from the ceiling? At Connecticut's Old State House, of course. It took us a while to “discover” this museum – because sometimes it’s difficult to persuade kids that anything featuring the word “old” in the title can be enjoyable – but once we visited, we realized that this Hartford County attraction is a historical treasure and a fun destination. In fact, the kids became so immersed in one activity (keep reading) that only a bribe persuaded them to leave.
