Best Nature Centers in New Jersey to Visit with Kids

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Wed, 03/14/2018 - 2:00pm

Kids will enjoy exploring the trails and streams at Nature Center. Photo by Lisa Warden

While all our favorite indoor destinations remain closed to slow the spread of Covid-19, New Jersey families can head outdoors to nature preserves or bike trails to stay active. Though the state's excellent nature centers are off-limits to the public for now, most of their surrounding trails are open for walks and hikes - as long as everyone maintains social distance.

Until the state's indoor play spaces and museums reopen, consider planning a family visit to one of New Jersey's awesome nature centers, where kids can experience the outdoors and perhaps read up on local habitats through signage posted around buildings.

We've rounded up 10 nature centers where kids can spend some time exploring nature and - when buildings reopen - check out hands-on exhibits and activities that explain our local flora and fauna. Under normal circumstances, most nature centers are open year-round, except for major holidays. For now, please check each center's website for trail accessibility.

Best At-Home Birthday Party Options for NJ Animal Lovers

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Fri, 02/02/2018 - 7:00am

Take your kid to a birthday party and you expect to see other kids—but what about a flamingo, a bearded dragon, a chinchilla, or a kinkajou? If you have a young animal lover in your family, you can bring more to the party table than safari-printed plates and plastic animals. These New Jersey companies bring over live animals—from ponies for riding to alligators for ogling—that will have your guests talking for weeks, if not years. Some of the animals can be handled and petted; others can be observed up close. Either way, kids will learn a lot and have a ton of fun along the way.

Read on to find out how to transform your home into the petting zoo of your child's dreams for his or her special day. Find more New Jersey kids' party ideas in our Birthday Guide.

Westchester's Free Outdoor Summer Concerts in June & July

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Wed, 06/14/2017 - 10:00am

Grab a blanket, picnic dinner, and maybe event a glass of wine because whether you go to work or drive the camp carpool, a free concert in the park is just the thing to end your day on a relaxing note. Here in Westchester, we're lucky enough to have many of our parks on the waterfront, and you'd be hard-pressed to beat that view at sunset.

This summer, towns around the county are hosting bands playing everything from rock to jazz to country to Cuban. How's that for variety? While most of these are completely free, a few do charge a small fee for parking.

New Jersey Art Studios that Encourage Kids To Play with Glass

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Mon, 04/17/2017 - 4:23pm

Broken glass at home often leads to warnings of keep back and be careful, but at a number of art studios across the state, kids are encouraged to play with the stuff. Don't worry, cuts and scratches are not involved. In these studios, kids (and adults) can cut, glue, blow, and fuse colorful bits and pieces of glass to make sun catchers, jewelry, picture frames, and other unique designs—often with the help of trained studio artists. We've searched out some spots with open studio times and classes where kids and adults can express their inner Chihuly.

Rock n Roll Classes: Where Westchester Kids can Unleash Inner Jaggers & Joplins

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Wed, 02/22/2017 - 12:26pm

So your child wants to a be a rock n roll star? Then listen now to what we say ...

In response to a growing demand, several music schools here in Westchester have either added rock to their repertoire or opened to exclusively teach the sound to a new generation of aspiring artists. The schools differ in their approaches but all offer both group and individual instruction. Some also encourage public performing or offer opportunities for recording.

Read on to learn about places in our area that offer rock lessons for budding musicians with either amateur or serious aspirations. Looking for more classes in Westchester? Consult our Classes Guide and sign up for our newsletters.

Mid-winter holidays are few and far between and often focus on Valentine’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day. Less celebrated is the Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year). This year, local festivities marking the year of the rooster give families a chance for fun cultural immersion.

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Fri, 12/23/2016 - 12:00pm

Followers of the Jewish calendar know that our holidays seem to float from year to year. We’ve collected some of the most family-friendly activities occurring in Westchester and Putnam counties. For more fun outings this month, be sure to check out our Holiday Fun Guide and Event Calendar, and don't forget to follow us on Facebook.

What Westchester Kids Can Do with Leftover Halloween Candy

Submitted by Alison Reiser on Sat, 10/29/2016 - 4:00pm

Like other big days, Halloween is a holiday of traditions. There's the tradition of collecting heavy bags of candy, the tradition of eating it until you're sick, and the tradition of wondering what the heck you're supposed to do with it all a few days later.
