Have You Seen the Whimsical, Kid-Designed Playground at PS 197?

Playgrounds are an important part of the fabric of NYC—and no one knows that better than the kids. That's why my daughter and I are so excited about the brand-new playground at Brooklyn's PS 197—aka her old school, Kings Highway Academy. What was once a large, gray blacktop with a small, faded jungle gym in one corner has had new life breathed into it with a much-needed upgrade that's colorful, varied, and, endearingly, designed by the kids of PS 197.

With these improvements, I could easily classify it as one of NYC's best playgrounds. Gone are the days my daughter and her classmates endured of having to make up games to play in the wide empty space, or hiding fence posts during attempted games of hide and seek. This bright new spot is a perfect place for a midday escape, and even better: Outside of school hours, it's open to the public.

Pokémon-loving New Yorkers have something new to be excited about: A brand-new store has opened to the public, where Poké fans, young and old, can get their fix. Poké Court just opened a 2,000-square-foot flagship store in the Meatpacking District, and it's stocked with goodies for fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game and beyond.

As a lifelong fan of the franchise (currently working my way through Pokémon Legends: Z-A), I stopped by to check out what the new store has to offer for adults and kids, and it seems destined for a place on our list of NYC stores where you can play for free.

A Perfect Day on Museum Mile Exploring NYC’s Art Corridor

Submitted by Yuliya Geikhman on Tue, 10/14/2025 - 1:07pm

The Met is one of our favorite spots on Museum Mile, but there's so much more to explore! Photo by author

New York City is home to many incredible museums, from the mighty Metropolitan Museum of Art to lesser-known gems, like the single-room Mmuseumm. It would take weeks to visit every museum in NYC scattered throughout the five boroughs.

Luckily, some of New York City's best museums are clustered together along the Upper East Side's aptly named Museum Mile. Whether you're a local or a visitor, I invite you to explore this stretch of Fifth Avenue, which is home to my favorite museums in NYC—plus some lovely Central Park destinations. If it feels intimidating to tackle the area and its many attractions, don't worry: I've put together a personal itinerary for the perfect day exploring Museum Mile.

NYC has so many baby hangouts, hot tot spots, terrific tween events, and teen entertainment. But what if you want to go somewhere as a whole family? Go on a family adventure through NYC thanks to these incredible spots that have things to do with kids of all ages and cater to every member of the family.

Our picks include everything from romping in Central Park to fun seasonal activities like hitting NYC's outdoor ice rinks or climbing aboard the wild rides at Luna Park.

Head through the bright yellow door to see the treasures of the Coney Island Museum—as unique as the neighborhood it pays homage to!

When you visit Luna Park or Deno's Wonder Wheel at Brooklyn's Coney Island, you're seeing a piece of living history. The world-famous and innovative amusement parks have been around since the late 1800s, and luckily, there's a place that celebrates the lengthy history of the area: The Coney Island Museum.

This local hidden gem is a loving homage dedicated to the area's rich history, old attractions and artifacts, and their impact on the culture of entertainment—many locals have no idea the museum even exists. Here's why this NYC hidden gem is worth visiting next time you find yourself in this shore front enclave.

Hidden Gem for Families in NYC: Hallett Nature Sanctuary in Central Park

Submitted by Yuliya Geikhman on Tue, 09/16/2025 - 2:42pm

The buildings of midtown feel a world away when you're immersed in the Hallett Nature Sanctuary.

You've probably seen the Hallett Nature Sanctuary in Central Park without even realizing it. The 4-acre green space is located across from the Pond in the southeastern corner of the park, and serves as a scenic, lush backdrop for the body of water. What most visitors don't realize is that this space has been open to the public for nearly a decade. The Hallett Nature Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Central Park, and it's a perfect NYC space to explore with kids for a moment of peace that transports you out of the city.
