Polynesian Star Lore and Navigation in the Pacific
The Mystic Seaport Museum celebrates the diversity of the night sky by highlighting the star lore of different cultures, and the traditions of "wayfinders."
This week, the summer series concludes with an in-depth look at Polynesian star lore. Long before the development of the compass, chart, and sextant, the Polynesian people were fearlessly navigating the vast Pacific Ocean, using observations of the stars and a keen memory to find their way across the sea. By organizing the night sky into giant constellations known as Star Families, the ancient methods of tool-less navigation continue today in the descendants of these amazing wayfinders..
