If a family trip to Spain is on your bucket list, it’s totally worth the trek across the Atlantic! From sunny beaches to magical cities, Spain is packed with kid-friendly adventures, delicious food, and culture packed into every plaza.

If traveling abroad feels daunting, read on for our travel tips and itinerary ideas for how to plan a trip to family vacation in Spain.

How to Make Long-Haul Flights to Spain Easier With Kids

Flying to Spain from the US can be a long trip—think 7 to 12 hours depending on your route. For example, flights from Miami to Madrid clock in at just under 9 hours, which unfortunately allows plenty of time for sibling squabbles or a tantrum or two.

If possible, book an overnight flight to Spain so everyone can snooze through most of the trip and land at Madrid-Barajas Airport hopefully feeling rested. Reserve seats and meal options in advance, and pack plenty of snacks. Bring travel pillows, kid-sized headphones, and tablets loaded with favorite shows, movies, and games to help pass the time.

How to Beat Jet Lag When Traveling to Spain With Kids

Spain is either 5 or 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time depending on the season, so jet lag is part of the deal. Ease the adjustment by nudging bedtimes earlier in the days before your trip.

Once you arrive, keep naps short and get outside—sunlight helps reset everyone’s body clock. Plan at least one fun, low-pressure activity for your first day in Spain to keep spirits high and to set yourselves up for success.

Family-Friendly Spain Itinerary: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and the Pyrenees

Adjust these itinerary ideas depending on how long you have to travel. I suggest at least a week if possible, but you could definitely spend longer!

Make Madrid Your First Stop

Madrid is truly the perfect first stop—full of culture, green spaces, street performers, and delicious tapas. Start your visit by shaking off jet lag in El Retiro Park, where you can rent rowboats or let your kids romp around the many playgrounds.

During the rest of your stay in the country’s capital, make sure to visit Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales for its impressive collection of dinosaur skeletons and fossils. Head to Zoo Aquarium de Madrid to explore a huge collection of animals from around the world. And don’t miss Museo del Prado for world-class art that will wow all ages.

Explore Barcelona–And Stop by Seville

Filled with Antoni Gaudí’s colorful, curvy architecture, visiting Barcelona is like stepping into a storybook. Let the kids explore Park Güell, a whimsical wonderland designed entirely by the famous architect himself.

When you’re ready for a change of scenery, hit Barceloneta or Nova Icària Beach for swimming and sand castle building. And for even more seaside fun, continue south to Costa del Sol for a family beach vacation in Spain. On the way, make sure to stop in Seville—a vibrant city of flamenco, orange trees, and beautiful historic sites.

Find Outdoor Adventure in the Pyrenees

Once you’ve hit the beach, take off to the mountains! The Pyrenees in Spain offer jaw-dropping scenery and endless activities. In Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, you can hike, ski, canoe, or ride horses depending on the season. Your kids won’t even remember what screentime is…
