19th Annual Texas Classic Sumo Tournament at Asia Society Texas
Visitors are invited to experience the thrill of sumo wrestling up close at this open-weight tournament, where lightweights and heavyweights face off just like the professionals in Japan.
Co-hosted by Houston’s Shōgeki Sumo Dojo — known for their dynamic performances at festivals and cultural events across North America — this exciting event brings the tradition and intensity of sumo to life. Wrestlers from sumo clubs across Texas will compete, including a powerful women’s division. Former professional sumo wrestler Koomah of Japan’s Kise Beya will serve as the tournament emcee.
In addition to the main matches, guests can enjoy a halftime performance from the Houston Kendama Dojo, showcasing the skill and flair of this traditional Japanese toy sport.
Each ticket includes two complimentary drinks (nonalcoholic options available) courtesy of Asahi Beer, along with access to unique vendors offering Japanese gifts and treats. After the competition, families can meet the wrestlers, enjoy free ice cream from Gallivant Ice Cream, sip drinks, and sample sumo noodles.
This one-of-a-kind event blends culture, athleticism, and fun — a perfect outing for families looking to explore something new!
