Your Ultimate Guide to LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston

7/25/24 - By Tara D

For LEGO-obsessed kids and their families, a visit to LEGOLAND Discovery Center at Assembly Row in Somerville, MA, promises an almost magical experience. To make the most of your adventure, we've gathered insider tips, highlights, and essential information, whether you're planning a family day out or a memorable LEGO-themed birthday party. Get ready for a fun-filled, LEGOtastic day!

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston: Highlights Not to Miss

MINILAND: A Tiny Boston Masterpiece

Prepare to be awestruck by MINILAND, a miniature LEGO version of Boston that's simply awesome. Beyond its incredible detail, MINILAND comes alive with realistic sound and lighting effects and a multitude of moving parts. Discover interactive stops like racing boats on the Charles River, playing in Fenway Park, illuminating office building floors, operating construction machinery, and enjoying a concert at the Hatch Shell. The Master Model Builder constantly updates MINILAND to reflect current city happenings, ensuring a fresh experience with every visit.

Active Play Zones: Burn Energy the LEGO Way

Kids can unleash their energy in a variety of active play areas:

  • LEGO Friends House: Sing karaoke and engage in imaginative pretend play.

  • LEGO City Play Zone: Climb a soft structure and explore.

  • DUPLO Farm: Slide down a charming barn slide.

  • Kingdom Quest Ride: Become a hero by shooting your way through this interactive game to save the princess.

  • Merlin’s Apprentice Ride: Kids 4 feet tall can pedal their way through this magical ride (adults can watch from a distance or ride along for a workout!).

Souvenirs: Tangible Memories to Take Home

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston offers unique and affordable souvenirs:

  • Factory Tour Brick: After experiencing the LEGO Factory Tour (a unique video game attraction), you receive a free Factory Tour brick – perfect for adding a magnet and displaying at home.

  • Minifigure Trading: Encourage your kids to trade Minifigures with the friendly and knowledgeable staff, a fantastic way to acquire a new memento and spark conversation.

  • Master Builder Workshop Models: Purchase the model of the month from the gift shop after attending a Master Builder workshop.

  • Wonder Wall & More: The gift shop also features a "wonder wall" of bricks, a vast array of keychains, and other small items, alongside the pricier LEGO kits.

4D Cinema: A Sensory Film Experience

Step beyond 3D with the unique 4D movies, enhanced with sensory elements like wind and snow you can truly feel. With three different 15-minute films, you might even catch them all during multiple visits.

Building & Testing: Unleash Your Inner LEGO Master

For true LEGO fans, building is paramount:

  • Open-Ended Play: Find receptacles of bricks everywhere – in the heart of the Center (conveniently placed in front of adult benches), giant soft bricks in the Play Zone, DUPLO bricks in the farm area, and more.

  • Earthquake Tables: Challenge your building skills by constructing a structure and testing its stability.

  • LEGO Racers: Build & Test: Design and race your own LEGO car down the track.

  • Master Builder Academy: Attend a workshop to learn how to build the project of the month.

Insider Tips: Things to See and Do at LEGOLAND Boston

  • Minifigure Trading: Don't forget to bring your own Minifigure to trade with the staff!

  • MINILAND Hidden Gems: Keep an eye out for hidden dragons, SpongeBob, sharks, pirates on watercraft, and an underwater tea party within MINILAND.

  • Clock Tower Show: Watch the clock tower on the hour and half-hour for an entertaining show.

  • Master Builder Academy Workshops: Plan to attend one of the hourly workshops (included with admission). You can even purchase the model kit of the project of the month in the gift shop.

  • Hilarious Bathrooms: Even if you don't need to go, take a peek inside the bathrooms – the doors are famously funny!

  • Master Builder at Work: Look into the office windows to observe the Master Model Builder in action.

Good to Know Before Your LEGOLAND Discovery Center Visit

  • Parking & Transportation: Parking is free at Assembly Row, and there's a convenient Orange Line T stop right there.

  • Ride Restrictions: Babies cannot ride either of the two rides. Children under 4 feet tall must be accompanied by an adult. The Kingdom Quest ride offers a handicap-accessible chariot.

  • Food Policy: Outside food is not permitted. The on-site café offers a selection of light eats. If you have food restrictions or wish to save money, plan your visit to avoid meal times.

  • No Ice Cream at Café: Be aware that the café does not serve ice cream, despite a giant LEGO ice cream dish display. J.P. Licks is conveniently located across Assembly Row if you're craving a scoop.

  • Adults Night: Adults are not allowed to visit without a child unless it's during a monthly Adults Night. This is a great opportunity for parents to revisit favorite attractions without the kids.

  • Recommended Ages: The Discovery Center is best suited for children between 3 and 10 years old, with an ideal age range of 4-9. While an 11-year-old seriously into LEGO might still enjoy it, it's not recommended for children under three.

  • Online Tickets: Buy your tickets online in advance to guarantee entry, as they often sell out.

  • Best Times to Visit: For the most enjoyable experience, visit during quieter times. Call ahead to inquire about less crowded periods. Generally, late afternoon or evening, especially Sunday afternoons and evenings, are the calmest at the Boston Discovery Center.

  • Annual Pass Value: Consider purchasing an annual pass. LEGOLAND Discovery Center is often best enjoyed in shorter doses. An annual pass allows you to leave when kids get tired or crowds increase, and return another time. The staff constantly makes improvements, so each visit offers something new.
