4. Arkansas — Crater of Diamonds State Park, Murfreesboro

Crater of Diamonds is the only place in the world where the public can search for real diamonds in their original volcanic source. More than 35,000 diamonds have been found by visitors since it became an Arkansas state park in 1972.

5. California — San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo routinely tops lists of the best zoos in the world! The 100-acre wildlife park holds a whopping 12,000 rare and endangered animals from some 650 species, from giant pandas and polar bears to gorillas and capybaras. The zoo's three play areas are truly incredible, with fun elements like rope bridges, a fossil dig, puzzles, and more. A 4D movie, a miniature train, and animal demonstrations are other fun activities for kids.
Insider Tip:
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is about 30 miles north of the zoo in Escondido, but it's well worth the drive. Take a safari through a preserve where you'll see animals like giraffes and antelope roaming. There are also fun kid activities including play areas, a carousel, and live shows.

In the summer, you can swim, float on a tube, or skimboard in Medano Creek, which forms at the base of the dunes from melting snow. By August, the creek dries up. It gets very crowded on weekends, so try to visit during the week!

7. Connecticut — Mystic

Step back in time at the 19th-century Mystic Seaport Village, a fantastic living-history museum. See thousands of animals—including beluga whales, California sea lions, and black-footed penguins—at the Mystic Aquarium. Buy fun souvenirs at Olde Mistick Village.

We don't need to tell you to visit the famed Mystic Pizza, but if you're in Mystic between April and October, be sure to also eat at Sea Swirl, a clam shack off the Mystic River that's especially great at sunset. 8. Delaware — Rehoboth Beach

The Delaware beaches are a popular summer vacation spot for East Coast families. Rehoboth is especially kid-friendly thanks to its mile-long boardwalk full of rides, games, food, and other fun. There are also playgrounds, mini golf, and a bustling downtown full of souvenir shops, ice cream spots, and restaurants.
Kid-Friendly Factor:
Funland Rehoboth has everything from kiddie rides to more thrilling ones (including the kitschy Haunted Mansion), an arcade, and midway games. Jungle Jim's water park is a fun alternative to the beach on a hot day. And you can't go wrong at any of the mini golf spots!

Many restaurants in Rehoboth and the surrounding beach towns don't take reservations, so plan to have early dinners—like, 5pm early—to avoid long wait times in the summer. 11. Hawaii — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island

Drive the Crater Rim Drive, then park and take a half-mile hike through a tropical rain forest down to the Thurston Lava Tube. Kids also love seeing the Steam Vents, which occur when ground water seeps into the hot volcanic rocks and returns to the surface as steam.

If you don't think your kids can last long, begin your adventure in the park later in the afternoon, since the lava flow is most visible when it's dark outside. There are several overlooks along Crater Rim Drive that offer great views of the lava, including the Volcano House and Kilauea Overlook.

14. Indiana — Children's Museum of Indianapolis

This gigantic museum is often rated as the top children's museum in the country! There are four floors of fun, plus a basement and a 7.5-acre outdoor sports area. Where else can you touch a dinosaur bone, steer a pedal car, do crafts, board the space station, and explore a world of miniatures in one visit?

Amazing exhibits appeal to kids with a variety of interests, like dinosaurs, space, trains, and pop culture. The third floor features an under-5 play zone with water play, bubbles, dress-up, and more. Kids will also love riding the vintage carousel and Ferris wheel and seeing a live show in the basement theater.

21. Massachusetts — Fenway Park, Boston

24. Mississippi — Biloxi

39. Rhode Island — Newport Mansions
Why It’s on Our List:
Newport's mansions (known to the residents as "cottages") were once the summer residences of the most rich and famous. Many of them are located along the famous 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, one of the most beautiful walks in the country, with the mansions on one side and breathtaking ocean views on the other.

The northern half of the Cliff Walk trail is paved, making it perfect for strollers. The grandest mansion, the Breakers (once the home of the Vanderbilts) is a National Historic Landmark that offers a family audio tour that's lots of fun for kids.

Your kids will likely learn about Mount Rushmore in school, so seeing it in person will wow them! Plus, there is lots to do nearby, like zipping down an alpine slide at Rushmore Tramway Adventures and bottle-feeding baby animals at Old MacDonald's Farm.

Toddlers and younger kids can soar on the Amazing Flying Elephants, buzz around on the Busy Bees, and more. Older kids and teens can catch thrills on a variety of roller coasters, like the firefighter-themed indoor coaster Blazing Glory. Next door is Dollywood Splash Country, a 35-acre water park.

According to park employees, Thursdays in the fall are the best time to visit Dollywood. On other days, consider buying TimeSaver passes, which allow expedited access to lines at over 15 rides and shows but are not cheap. Kids will love touching moon rocks, going inside a replica space shuttle, performing experiments at the Science Deck (my daughter made a mini rocket ship), seeing spacesuits worn by real astronauts, and so much more.
Insider Tip:
Space Center Houston offers four tram tours. Only one of them, the Historic Mission Control Tour, costs an additional fee, but it's worth it—you'll get to visit the mission control room from which NASA led the first moon landing mission! This was the highlight of our visit.

Marriott Marquis Houston — Centrally located in downtown Houston (about a 30-minute drive from Space Center Houston), the Marriott Marquis has a Texas-shaped lazy river and an infinity pool with spectacular skyline. Need we say more?
44. Utah — Dinosaur National Monument
Why It’s on Our List:
Visitors can see over 1,500 dinosaur fossils from roughly 150 million years ago exposed on a cliff face inside a quarry, as well as petroglyphs created by the Fremont people nearly 1,000 years ago.
Kid-Friendly Factor:
I mean, dinosaur bones... what more do kids need? But they can also earn their Junior Ranger badge via the US National Park Service, go hiking, see wildlife, and more.

45. Vermont — Maple Sugaring
Why It’s on Our List:
Maple sugaring is the process through which sap is turned into maple syrup and sugar. It involves tapping maple trees, collecting the sap, and boiling it to evaporate most of the water. The remaining sugar is then concentrated to create syrup. This is a fascinating Vermont tradition that generally takes place from late February through April.
Kid-Friendly Factor:
Maple sugaring is a fun, hands-on activity that teaches kids about trees, the evaporation process, and where a familiar food comes from. Plus, they get a sweet and delicious reward at the end!

46. Virginia — Colonial Williamsburg
Why It’s on Our List:
The world's largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg immerses visitors into life in America in the 1700s. I have fond memories of visiting when I was a kid, and my own kids had a blast during our visit. Read all about it in my guide to visiting Colonial Williamsburg with kids.
Kid-Friendly Factor:
Kids love visiting the historic trade shops and learning about various 18th-century crafts, like blacksmithing, woodworking, weaving, and more. Other highlights for kids include tackling the hedge maze in the Governor's Palace garden, seeing (and hearing!) weapons and artillery demonstrations, and going through soldier training through the Under Arms program.
Insider Tip:
It's free to walk around the historic area, but everyone age 6 or older needs a ticket to enter the historic buildings. Buy them online ahead of time, where they're 10% cheaper. There are no vehicles allowed in the historic area, so your best bet is to park at the Visitor Center for $10 per day and take the free bus service to the historic area.

Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection — My family loved staying at this 18th-century-style hotel right in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg with an indoor pool and two outdoor pools. We could easily walk to the historic area and Merchants Square, then back to the hotel when we needed a rest.
47. Washington — Pike Place Market, Seattle
Why It’s on Our List:
Founded in 1907, the famous Pike Place Market is one of the oldest and largest continuously operating public markets in the US. Its nine historic acres in the center of downtown include shops, restaurants, and specialty food stands.
Kid-Friendly Factor:
Kids can find everything from fairy houses to plush toys to puzzles made by local craftspeople at the crafter market. Tween and teen Starbies lovers will enjoy visiting the world's first Starbucks, which opened in 1971 at Pike Place Market and still has a vintage feel. Prepare your wallet: It sells Starbucks merch you can't get anywhere else!
Insider Tip:

48. West Virginia — Harpers Ferry
Why It’s on Our List:
The idyllic town of Harpers Ferry in the lower Shenandoah Valley has a lot to offer with its breathtaking beauty and miles of hikes along the Appalachian Trail. And for history buffs, there is so much to learn: Harpers Ferry was a crucial spot for Civil War clashes, abolitionist raids, and civil rights struggles.
Kid-Friendly Factor:
Many Harpers Ferry trails are little-kid-friendly! One to try is the 1.5-mile Visitor Center to Lower Town Trail along the Shenandoah River, where kids will love seeing ruins and crossing a bridge with lots of frogs and turtles below.
Insider Tip:
